There are many web services that allow sending large files via email. Such services often upload the attachment to their servers, and provide a URL of the file to the recipient. Unfortunately, these services are often restricted by a 25MB (in general) upload limit. Recently, WinZip has come up with a new service christened ZipSend, which allows up to 2 GB (per email) of file transfer. Before you get carried away, however, it is worth mentioning that the 2GB limit is only available in the paid version, while the lite (free) version provides up to 50MB of free upload. What ZipSend basically does is that, it zips attached files and sends a link to the recipient to download the file from WinZip servers. This means that you can avoid flooding your friend’s account with heavy mails, and also circumvent the 25MB upload limit. What makes ZipSend quite unique from other web services of it’s kind, is the fact that it provides a plugin that integrates with MS Outlook, as well as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo mail.
To use ZipSend, you will have to sign up for an account and download the plugin to integrate the attachment option for online accounts and MS Outlook. Once the plugin is installed, you can attach and send files via MS Outlook using the Attach Large File option (from Message tab) and adding the heavy file.
When you click Send, a new window pops-up, where you are required to enter your ZipSend login credentials. Click OK to send your message.
When the recipient receives this message, a download link is added to the email. Click this link to get redirected to ZipSend servers for retrieving the attachment.
Once the ZipSend plugin is installed, you can automatically attach and send files via ZipSend using your Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail accounts. This option becomes automatically available when you click Attach option from Compose. You can also enable compression and encryption for the file that is to be sent. In case you are attaching an image, it can be resized using the Resize Image option.
Files uploaded via the ZipSend free account is kept on WinZip servers for 7 days, whereas the pro account (worth $9.99) provides you with file transfer stats, along with the ability to send unlimited number of file transfers, file storage time, the ability to delete files and up to 2 GB file storage limit.
WinZip has also introduced ZipShare service, which enables uploading and sharing files via your Facebook account. You can check out our review of ZipShare here.
