Tilt-Shift photography is the use of camera movements on small and medium format cameras, and the use of tilt for selective focus, for simulating a miniature scene. Sometimes, the term is also used when the shallow depth of field is simulated with digital post processing. Normally, a tilt-shift lens is required to achieve the desired effect optically. This special tilting lens for simulating a macro shot or a miniature scene costs a huge sum of money, and if you don’t have that kind of extra money to spend on it, it is easy to produce the same effect digitally. The great thing about applying the tilt-shift effect using digital post processing is that, neither you lose the quality of an image, nor you gain anything if you use an expensive lens for the job. Artensoft Tilt-Shift Generator is an image editor for Windows that produces convincing, natural looking tilt-shift scenes and works as good as a real lens.
Note: Artensoft Tilt-Shift Generator is a paid tool that will make your wallet lighter by $49.95 (still cheaper than an actual tilt-shift lens). AddictiveTips is giving away 5 full licenses for our readers, details of which can be found at the end of this post.
There are two reasons to use the Tilt-Shift Generator instead of a real lens. First, the application costs a lot less than a professional tilt-shift lens, and second, whatever you shoot with a tilt-shift lens is distorted forever, whereas, by using this application, you can retain the original image in the clear form, and apply the tilt-shift effect only to a copy.
The application has a very user friendly GUI. The image appears on the left, while the controls to change the settings for applying the effect are available on the right side. To load an image, click Browse and navigate to the required image. By default, you are given the option to increase/decrease the Focus Size, show/hide Bokeh Mask, toggle Back & Front Focus Sync, change the Defocus Options, including Strength and Defocus Graph of the area outside the focus range and Saving Options, such as Use Original Size or Resize image to a custom size. There is also an Additional Options button, which when clicked, reveals Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Bokeh Type, Bokeh Boost and Diapason settings.
The changes cannot be previewed in real time, and to view the changes made to the image, you will have to click Create Preview and wait for the application to complete processing the image.
The Settings menu under file allows you to adjust the JPEG quality of saving the edited image. The need to click Create Preview to view every change is very annoying and a real time preview can be a welcome addition to the application. Otherwise, the application performs everything advertised by the developer without any glitch. It must be noted that, while there are many other such apps available out there, both for desktop and mobile platform, Artensoft’s program excels in the quality of the post-processing algorithm that it employs. Not only were the results remarkable beautiful and realistic, but also, Tilt-Shift Generator even lets you simulate miniatures that would be impossible even with an optical lens, thanks to its selective focus settings and tweaks.
Tilt-Shift Generator works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Window 7. If you get unlucky with the giveaway, you can still take the application out for a spin through the trial version available, and see for yourself if it’s worth the buck you spend.
