Considering the countless options available out there, finding the right audio editor that exactly matches your needs can be a tough job. Most of the available tools can perform simple editing tasks such as converting audio files into different formats, splitting them, or just cutting a part out of the complete track. However, advanced audio editing that involves adding silence at different points, inverting and reversing the track, generating different types of sounds, amplifying the track, etc, requires you to have more sophisticated tools. We have previously covered several audio editing applications such as the cross-platform Ocenaudio for analyzing and edit audio files, as well as web apps like FileLab Audio Editor that let you to apply different effects to an audio track. WaveShop is an open-source audio editor for Windows that specializes in handling WAV files and modifies only specific parts of the track as per your requirement, rather than the whole track in one go.
A major benefit of the application is support for huge WAV files, exceeding even 2 GB in size. You can open multiple WAV files at a time for simultaneously editing them. You can also cut a part from one file and paste it into another one.
Files can be added to the interface from the File menu, while simple editing options such as Cut, Copy, Paste, Insert (Silence), Start Selection, End Selection, Select All, Undo, Redo etc. can be found under the Edit menu. As stated earlier, you can cut, copy & paste portions of audio both within the track as well as between different tracks currently loaded in the app.
The Transport tab has options to Play, Stop, Rewind and Loop the track, while the View tab lets you toggle all the available toolbars for the main interface, zoom in and out, and fit the current view in the window.
Several advanced editing features of the application are accessible under the Audio tab. It allows you to perform different actions on the selected part of the track. To apply them to the complete track, you can simply select the complete track. These advanced editing options let you Amplify the track, add Fade effect, Generate a WAV file by specifying a frequency, pulse width, phase, channels & sample rate etc, Invert, Normalize and Reverse the track, View RMS Statistics, and much more. You can also insert channels into the multi-track files, and swap the current channels with each other.
Each feature in the Audio tab has a further set of options that you can tweak for that feature. For instance, if you choose the Speakers option, you you can specify a custom speaker arrangement for the selected track.
WaveShop works on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. You can grab the installer as well as portable version of the app from the link provided below.
