VyprVPN Vs ExpressVPN: Which One Is Right for Me?

For those of you who are trying to choose a new VPN provider: this article is for you. With so many options for VPN providers available to customers, it can be tough to know which one to choose. Below we’re going to go through some reasons that you might want a VPN, then offer tips on choosing a reliable and trustworthy VPN provider.

Two of the VPN providers that we often recommend here at Addictive Tips are VyprVPN and ExpressVPN. These twoVyprVPN and ExpressVPN providers are both very popular and offer all of the essential features that we look for in a VPN service. However, there are some differences between the two providers. We’re going to go through the key features of both providers and then compare them, so you can see which of the two options is right for you. Read on to learn about VyprVPN vs ExpressVPN.

Why Use A VPN?

There are many reasons to use a VPN, but for many users the most pressing issues are privacy and security. With more surveillance of online activity than ever before, users want a way to keep their browsing histories, downloads, and electronic messages private and secure. Using a VPN achieves this by encrypting all of the data that your device sends over the internet, so that no one else can view your online activities.

A further reason to use a VPN is to protect your device from hackers when you connect to public wifi, and so that you can access region locked content like the Comedy Central website in the US or the BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Either ExpressVPN or VyprVPN will let you get around region locks and keep you safe from hackers, while protecting your privacy too. But there are some differences between the services in terms of features.

Evaluating VyprVPN Vs ExpressVPN

To start with the basics, the good news is that both VyprVPN and ExpressVPN are well regarded VPN providers who offer all the essential features that you need. The both have features like strong security provided through the use of 256-bit encryption, so no one will be able to decrypt your data and spy on your online activities. Both services will effectively hide your IP address when you are online, so you won’t be the victim of DDoS attacks or other hacks, and your online activities won’t be traceable to your real IP address.

Another essential feature of both VyprVPN and ExpressVPN is that neither service has a bandwidth cap or any restrictions on the amount of data that you can transfer, so you’re free to browse and download as much as you want without worrying about hitting a cap. And both allow multiple simultaneous connections, so you can use just one subscription to a VPN service to protect all of your devices, like your desktop, your laptop, your phone, and your tablet.

But there are some differences between the VyprVPN and ExpressVPN services that you should consider when choosing one of these providers for your VPN. Here are the key differences:

Fast Connection Speeds

The way a VPN works involves routing the data that your device sends over the internet through an extra step before it reaches its destination: the data is sent to a server run by your VPN provider where it is encrypted before being sent on to its destination. This means that using a VPN will always slow down your internet connection to some extent. But a VPN with really fast connections will have so little slow down that you won’t even notice it, while a VPN with slow connections can be painful to use.

The good news is that both VyprVPN and ExpressVPN have extremely fast connections. ExpressVPN is famous for its super fast connections – hence the name Express – and our testing has found that the connections are as fast as is promised. When it comes to VyprVPN, they do not advertise high speeds as a big part of their promotion – but we were happy to discover extremely fast connections using VyprVPN in our testing.

Both providers are perfect for downloading large files very quickly, streaming high definition videos, and other bandwidth intensive tasks. We found both providers to offer some of the fastest connections we’ve seen from VPN providers, so you’ll be happy with your speeds in either case. We’re calling this round a draw.

Number Of Servers Available

Another factor to consider when looking at different VPN providers is the number of servers that they have available for users to connect to. If you have problems with one server or find it too slow, it’s helpful to be able to hop over to another server for better performance. For this reason, a VPN provider with a large network of servers is preferable. It also helps to have servers available in many different countries, so that you can easily get around region locks and browse the internet without restrictions.

ExpressVPN has a massive network of servers, covering more than 1500 servers in 94 different countries. These servers are available in a variety of countries including the US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. There is a full list of available ExpressVPN servers on their website here.

VyprVPN has a slightly smaller network of servers available, covering more than 700 servers in more than 70 countries. These include servers in North America, Oceania, Africa, Europe, Central America, South America, the Middle East and Asia. See a full list of VyprVPN servers that are available here.

While both services offer plenty of servers and are highly likely to meet your needs, we declare ExpressVPN the winner in this category due to its larger number of servers available.

Privacy

One of the biggest factors that you should consider when choosing a VPN is the privacy policy. The most important function that a VPN service performs is protecting your privacy, so you should look carefully at the privacy policies of each provider to see if they meet your standards. One main issue in VPN privacy is the issue of logging – that is, keeping records of VPN users’ logins and activities when they go online. Critics argue that any kind of log can be subpoenaed by the police, so the only way for users to stay safe is to use a VPN that keeps no logs at all.

The no logs approach is taken by ExpressVPN. They have a very high level of privacy protection, keeping no logs of any kind of user activity that takes place on their network. If you’re wondering how effective this is in practice, then a real-world example will help to make this clear. Recently, police in Turkey seized an ExpressVPN server located in that country because they were looking for information about an ExpressVPN user. But to the frustration of the police, and to the relief of ExpressVPN users, they found no useable data of any kind on the server.

The approach taken by VyprVPN is different. They keep data on what they call “connection logs” for thirty days. According to their privacy policy, the exact data that this log is as follows: “the user’s source IP address, the VyprVPN IP address used by the user, connection start and stop time and total number of bytes used.” They do not log user traffic or inspect traffic packets. They argue that they need to keep logs in order to improve speed and performance and for troubleshooting purposes. They also point out that many VPNs claim not to keep logs but actually do record some information about users.

It is admirable for VyprVPN to be honest about the logs that they keep and their reasons for doing so. In practice, the kind of information that they log and the short time logs are kept for means that there is unlikely to be a problem with privacy for their users. However, we can’t deny that the ExpressVPN policy that blanket refuses to keep logs for any reason is better for privacy, so we’re calling ExpressVPN the winner here.

P2P Downloads

Torrent users will also want to look into the P2P policies of their VPN, as not all VPN providers support torrent use. Both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN allow P2P downloads on their system, and VyprVPN in particular has a reputation for being torrent friendly. Torrent users will have a great experience with VyprVPN, so we’re awarding this round to them.

Getting Around VPN Blocks

If you’re an experienced VPN user, you’ll have noticed that not every site or every network allows VPN use. If you try to use a VPN in a highly restricted internet country like China, for example, you’ll often find that networks block any connection that appears to come from a VPN. This means that your VPN is essentially unusable in some locations or on some networks.

An example of a website that blocks VPNs is Netflix. Netflix tries to stop users from accessing content from countries other than their own using a VPN, due to copyright issues. With most VPNs, if you connect to a server and then go to the Netflix website, you’ll see an error message when you try to play a video. The good news is that ExpressVPN is the best VPN we’ve found for watching Netflix. It works remarkable consistently, and there’s even a full guide to using Netflix with ExpressVPN here.

VyprVPN is a bit of a mixed bag. It does typically worked with Netflix – and in our testing we were able to access Netflix UK and other with no problems – but some users have reported issues with using VyprVPN with Netflix in the past. This is particularly a problem when trying to access Netflix US, for which some US servers work but most do not. However VyprVPN has an ace up its sleeve in the form of its Chameleon protocol. This option encrypts not only your data, but your metadata too, meaning that details like the origin and destination of data packets is hidden. This defeats most VPN blocks and means that you can use the VPN to stay safe and browse freely even on highly restricted networks like those in China.

Due to the exceptional usefulness of the Chameleon protocol option for accessing restricted networks, we award this round to VyprVPN.

Extra Features In The Software

Experienced VPN users will want to have plenty of options for tweaking their VPN connections, and beginner VPN users will benefits from simple to use tools that confirm the integrity of their VPN connection. So the quality of the software created by each VPN provider is important, as good software will both be easy to use and have lots of extra features to make your life easier.

The ExpressVPN software is very simple to look at, with clear and obvious buttons on the home page to perform key tasks like connecting/disconnecting from the VPN, use the smart select feature to find the best server, and choosing your server from a list. In the settings you’ll find options for a kill switch, a DNS leak test, a speed test, and an IP address checker so that you can ensure your connection is running as it should be.

The VyprVPN software is a bit more advanced, with a graph on the home screen showing the rate of data coming through the VPN. You can also see your public IP address, the time connected, which VPN protocol is being used, and whether the NAT firewall is enabled. In the options panel you’ll find a large number of options that you can tweak to your liking, including a kill switch, automatic reconnect, a choice of VPN protocols to use, DNS configuration and leak protection, notification options, and more. The advanced tab has even more options like route delay, TAP adapter, TLS timeout, and more. One thing that we do recommend to enhance your privacy is to go to the General tab and to deselect options to send non identifiable app data and crash reports to VyprVPN.

In this round, although the ExpressVPN software is easy to use for new users, the winner has to be VyprVPN for having so much flexibility and so many customisation options so that you can tweak your VPN to your personal needs.

Number Of Platforms Supported

The final factor to consider in your choice of VPN provider is the operating systems that are supported. With your one VPN subscription you can protect all of your devices at once, as long as they have software available. So it helps if your VPN provider offers apps for many different platforms.

ExpressVPN supports many devices. As well as the essentials: Windows, Android, iOS, Mac, and Linux, the software can also be installed on some routers, games consoles like Playstation and Xbox, and other devices like AppleTV and Amazon FireTV. In addition, you can install an extension onto your web browser to easily connect and disconnect while browsing, and ExpressVPN has extensions available for the Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari browser.

VyprVPN also has software available for Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS, and it can be set up on Linux using OpenVPN. In addition, they offer support for some routers, NASes, and smart TVs. The highly security minded types who use Blackphone – a privacy centred smartphone – will be glad to know that there is a VyprVPN app available for this phone too.

Both providers offer support for extra devices as well as the essential core platforms, so this round is pretty much a tie – but arguably ExpressVPN comes out just ahead thanks to its offering of browser extensions too.

Which Is Best – ExpressVPN or VyprVPN?

Overall, both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN are great choices for users looking for a VPN that is fast, reliable, and secure. They both support plenty of different devices and have software that fulfils all the essential functions. The server networks are large and the security is good.

ExpressVPN will remain the top choice for most users due to its unbeatable security and wide support. We’d particularly recommend ExpressVPN for new users who want a VPN that is simple and has very easy to use software. However, experienced users should consider VyprVPN too. It has more advanced software and many more options to allow you to tweak your connection. Plus, VyprVPN can defeat VPN blocks which makes it the number one choice for users living in or travelling through China.
