PDF is arguably one of the most widely used document formats in the world. A lot of websites host various type of documents, such as Brochures, Instructions manuals, Guides etc, all in PDF format. Adobe Reader is undoubtedly one of the best PDF file viewers out there (Adobe is the company behind the format, after all), but there are still some options missing from it. Jeves PDF Utility is a portable, Java-based application that copies PDF document to another one, merges multiple PDF files together, adds text watermark and encrypts PDF documents with a password. You can copy a PDF document as a whole or only a few pages to specified PDF file. Apart from password protecting the document, you can choose which access permissions to allow for recipients.
The application interface has 4 tabs, namely, Copy, Combine, Watermark, and Encryption. To copy a few pages, specify the page ranges separated by hyphens “-“ and the page number separated by commas “,”. For example, if you want to copy pages from 1 to 3, 5 to 8, and 10 and 12 of the document, use the following syntax.
1-3, 5-8, 10, 12
If you want to copy the whole document, simply leave the Copy Pages field blank. Once done, click Copy and specify a name for new PDF file.
From Combine, you can combine two or more than two PDF documents into a single document. Click Add to add the documents and use the up and down arrows buttons to sort them in required order. Now click Combine and name the new file.
The Encryption tab deals with selecting files that you want to encrypt. First, enter the User Password which you want to share with recipients. You can customize access permissions for user password, such as, Allow Assembly, Alloy Copy, All Form Fill In and so on. If you don’t want the recipients to copy or print the document, uncheck Allow Copy and Allow Print options. There are six Permissions to choose from. Check those permissions which you want to permit the user. Before clicking Encrypt, enter the owner password for gaining full access to PDF document. This Owner password allows you to bypass all the restrictions imposed on the document.
During testing, we encountered an issue with Watermark feature. We noticed that Jeves PDF Utility produces only 0 byte files when trying to add watermark to documents. Hopefully, developer will fix this issue in next release. It requires JRE (Java Runtime Environment) and works on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
