UndoClose For Windows [AddictiveTips Apps]

One of the most useful tab-management features of modern browsers is opening recently closed tabs using the Ctrl+Shift+T hotkey. It certainly saves the time one would’ve spent sifting through browsing history to find and open closed tabs. In contrast to browsers, Windows 7 manages folders and application windows differently; despite storing recently opened programs and items in Start Menu, it doesn’t support bringing them up again using a hotkey. Today, AddictiveTips brings you UndoClose - a free program that remembers all recently closed folders and applications, so that you can restore them in the same sequence in which they were closed using two hotkeys. In short, it enables you to open the last closed folder(s) and application(s) just like the way Firefox, Google Chrome and other browsers let you open the recently closed tab(s).

UndoClose-[AddictiveTips-Apps]

UndoClose supports two hotkey combinations; Ctrl+Shift+F and Ctrl+Shift+A, to open last closed folder (in Windows Explorer) and application, respectively. The hotkeys can be used multiple times. For example, if you close VLC Player, Notepad and iTunes, press Ctrl+Shift+A hotkey three times to launch VLC Player, Notepad and iTunes again.

UndoClose sits in the system tray after being launched and silently starts monitoring all folders and applications that are closed. It then helps you restore them using the hotkeys.

If the pre-defined hotkeys come in conflict with other global hotkeys, you can change them from Settings. To access Settings, click the system tray icon. You will also find all recently closed folders and applications with their complete source paths. You can open them by double-clicking the items in the list.

The application is built to actively keep log of all the apps and folders you close, and therefore, it consumes 35 MB of system memory. It’s worth mentioning here that memory usage depends upon the number of apps and folders you close during the session. UndoClose is a portable app that works on Windows 7 only. Both 32-bit and 64-bit OS are supported.

I tried UndoClose on Windows 7 64-bit and the GUI screen is always blank. It appears to be working fine, but I can’t see the interface so I can’t change any settings. When I drag other windows over the app the interface doesn’t refresh – see attachment.

    I have 8GB ram on an almost-new Intel i7 Dell laptop. It turns out the problem only occurs while I am running MaxiVista – the remote screen controller. When I disable that your screen suddenly appears. UndoClose still works even though I cannot see it’s interface so I’m not that bothered. Thanks for your reply!

App undo is working but folder undo is not working for me . I tried it for a few folder .
It says
” You have not closed any window till now ”

Great tool, but I have a problem. If I open Pictures, Music, Videos, Downloads folders and close them, UndoClose will only allow me to reopen the last folder I closed (the Downloads folder in my example). Any idea to fix this? Is this a bug or something?

  Forgot to mention that Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos folders inside Libraries is not supported at the time. Otherwise everything else works, even the main Libraries folder works.

I know it wasn’t designed for XP, but It works on Windows XP (SP3) too, but only the closed application part (it doesn’t detect closing folders in Explorer).
One idea i would like to see implemented is to add another hotkey that shows a small window with the icons and descriptions of the last closed programs so i can click on any of them to open the program, something like the “Recent apps” feature from Android.
This would be useful for me since i use a lot of small tools. I know i can click on the UndoClose icon in the tray and it opens the settings page where i can select the program from there, but that requires a click on a small icon and also once i select a program from the list it gets deleted.

It would be nice to have an option to enable/disable deleting the program from the list once you click, also another option would be needed to allow or not duplicate entries (for example i closed Notepad 4 times, i have 4 entries, but i would like it listed only once).

    Idea : the program should be able to be started from the command prompt with parameters, it would be useful for scripting (for example to launch it from a command shell or from an application launcher like Launchy or FARR)
    
    Bug : When you start the app it should also look if it’s already started, if it is then either transmit what’s on the command line or simply show the configuration dialog.
    For now, if you start the app twice, the second instance crashes with a “Cannot hook into shell” error.
    
    Improvement : it would be nice to be able to delete the shortcuts, for example I don’t need the “open last folder” option so i would like to be able to disable that shortcut (either a checkbox in front of the shortcut selection or simply pressing the “Del” or “Backspace” key in the selection box should delete the shortcut).
    
    Improvement : some apps contain in their application title the path to the file that it is editing/viewing, for example Notepad++ shows the complete path to the file it’s editing. It would be nice if UndoClose could read the path of the file, and when i restart Notepad++ from UndoClose it would give that file as a parameter (Notepad++ opens a file if you give the file’s path as the parameter in the command line).
    
    P.S. maybe a forum would be nice, there people could post ideas/bugreports. This application has a lot of potential so i think it would be worth it.
    Also, i don’t know what you think about opensource-ing it, but that could potentially make this app “evolve” faster.
    
    Of course, this are all just ideas, you can ignore them if you don’t consider them to be important or doable
    
    Oh, and before I forget, thanks for the program, it’s quite useful.

Hi thanks for the awesome work.

the only thing I wish this tool can have is to reopen the last closed file, like a word document. Reopening Word doesn’t make any use to me, but reopening a word document sure does.

Hi, I’m experiencing the same problem as Deniz: the App undo works fine but the folder undo does not. The Recently Closed Folders list remains empty. I’m using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit (italian).

Closed folders are shown in the closed app section and can be opened with STRG-SHIFT-A -
STRG-SHIFT-A causes an error message.

Crash explorer on my Windows 8 CP when hit the shortcut to restore a closed folder/app. Restore from gui is working fine. I hope you can fix it. Loving the software.

Just a suggestion, but it would be nice to be able to disable either the Undo Last Closed Folder or Undo Last Closed Application functionality. I want the Undo Close Folder, but not the Undo Close Application.

Also, when you change the hotkey for either option, you are unable to change the hotkey option to something different unless you either accept the change or close the settings window without saving and then re-open the settings. It would be nice for indecisive people like me to be able to try different key combinations.

Love the app and I believe those changes would make it even better.

The problem i encountered is that, although the Run at system startup checkbox is ticked and Windows shows UndoClose as a startup item, it doesn’t start with windows. Anyone eles ran into this issue? It would be so awesome if this would work! Running Win7Ultimate x64, if relevant
