NeechPad Is A Simple Rich Text Editor For Windows With Tab Support

Microsoft usually rotates the generation wheel of its Windows operating system every 3 years. Not only does the company bring core enhancements to the OS related to its security and performance, but at times, it revamps a few native utilities as well. Take Windows Media Player or Internet Explorer for instance; both these apps are more feature-rich now than they ever used to be. One application that has remained quite static in terms of development is Notepad. Even though it's quite handy considering what it does, the app has barely changed since Windows 95. It’s still a basic notes taking utility with a limited feature-set. While Windows also offers WordPad for editing rich text files, its interface isn't as minimal as that of Notepad. This is where third-party note-taking applications like NeechPad come to the rescue. Growly Write: Free Text Editor That Retains Formatting Of Imported Files [Mac]

Text editors, for the most part, have to be feature rich, or at the very least, provide a minimum number of features to make themselves useful. Too many features, and users might have trouble figuring everything out. It can also lead to a huge clutter of controls that you will never use. The default text editor in Mac, TextEdit, supports some very basic features, and many users still opt to find other text editing tools because this default app doesn’t meet their requirements. If, for any reason, you aren’t satisfied with TextEdit, Growly Write is a free Mac app that is a text editing tool with a very reasonable number of features, sans a gorgeous UI. The app’s features cover the basics for editing text, and allow you to open most common formats like RTF, DOC, DOCX etc, without losing the document’s original formatting. Read More

Storybook: Helper App For Writers That Stores Scene & Character Details

Not everyone might be as creative as Christopher Nolan or J.R.R Tolkien, but with meticulous planning and the right set of tools, we can at least come up with mesmerizing storylines that we all aspire. Great stories are intertwined with deep character building, memorable plots, fantastic locations, and most importantly, proper connection among all the aforementioned elements. If you are a writer, novelist or someone who pens stories just as a hobby, you must have an idea that, in order to tell readers of what’s happening in a particular scene or a chapter of your book, you should understand it yourself first. Any overlooked element in your novel or book can mislead to various plot holes, which itself leads to unexpected criticism. To overcome this very reason, one comprehensive story writing software you can probably try is Storybook. The application is open source, and contains various features that one requires for all kind of story writing. It lets you work on your project, in a scene by scene manner, meanwhile tagging various characters, locations and other factors to an on going scene. Typ-O: Mac OS X Text Editor With Grammar Check & Next Word Prediction

Spell check, as we’ve often said before, is a life saver in many situations, and perhaps that's why it exists universally in Mac OS X. Another equally useful feature, though not natively present in OS X, is grammar check. Normally, what you have to work with is a spell check and auto-correct feature that will correct those little typos you make, but can seriously alter the meaning of a sentence if it doesn’t predict a word correctly. Typ-O is a three-in-one Mac app with a text editor that creates and saves files in RTF format, a spelling and grammar checker, and a quick typing tool that allows you to insert a word via the function keys on your keyboard, so that you don’t have to type them out. Typ-O supports both American and UK English, and German. It adjusts its suggestions and the degree of corrections it needs to make, based on your language skills. Read More

SynWrite Is A Portable Syntax Editor With Tree Structure View For Code

Previously, we have gone over text editors the likes of Editra, a cross platform editor, and InType, an editor with a tabbed interface. Today we shall review and compare another advanced text and programming editor called SynWrite. It supports source code programming in over 70 languages (which include JAVA, C++, C, Cobol, Pascal, Perl, HTML, XML, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, etc.) and writing in over 80 file extensions (TXT and extensions allocated to the languages it supports). Like InType, it is a TDI-based interface and thus can open multiple files in new tabs. It supports a tree panel that keeps track of all code groups and provides links to them as well as a clipboard panel that stores all instances of copied text which can then be selected and used as you wish. It can also expand and collapse (i.e. show and hide) portions of the written code as you wish.

MobiText Is A Basic, Themeable Document Editor With Ribbon UI

Windows comes with the WordPad utility that provides sufficient options for most basic word processing needs. However, if you seek an application that goes beyond what WordPad has up its sleves - providing more features and options then a third-party software is the way to go. Just recently, we came across Document.Editor (reviewed here), a feature-rich application that we found to be a great alternative to WordPad. Developed by DyNiForm, MobiText is yet another similar utility that includes a handful of features to help you quickly create different types of documents such as reports, drafts, letters, resumes, memos etc. Similar to Document.Editor, it offers a ribbon-based interface. That's not all; the editor is skinnable as well (in case you rapidly get board of same UI looks). It comes packed with several different themes (Black, Blue, Metro, Windows 7 Style, Red and more) that you can easily switch between. As far as editing features are concerned, it provides you with tools sufficient for basic needs, such as copy, edit, cut, print, save, print preview, text color, spell check, indent and more. PilotEdit Lite: Advanced Text Editor That Can Handle Files Larger Than 50 GB

There are a host of text editors out there for Windows. Simpler text editing tasks can be performing using the default Windows Notepad, while for the complex ones, you can use Notepad++, an open-source text editor massively reviewed (and favored) on AddictiveTips. Previously, we covered a text editor for Windows, called Intype, which lets you perform advanced tasks using a host of sample code modules of several programming languages, including HTML, CSS, C, C++. Java, Perl, PHP, Python, SQL and a lot more. Today, we have another text editor called PilotEdit Lite, which doesn’t provide options to work with as many programming languages as Intype, but has a more focused approach. It works as a Text Editor, HTML editor, PHP editor, Java editor and Hex editor. The software can handle massive files - even those larger than 50 GB - and offers customizable syntax and keyword highlighting. More on the application past the break. Read More

SwipeSelection Allows Easier, Gesture-Based Text Selection In iOS [Cydia]

There isn’t much wrong with text selection in iOS, but needless to say, it could've been much more convenient. The area where the text to be selected is located, is usually hidden under your finger as you strive to move the cursor to an appropriate point. Also, users have to rely on the little magnifying glass that appears while seeking within text, and that can get a bit disorienting at times. This problem has been countered by a certain developer from the Cydia store, whose new tweak, SwipeSelection, makes use of gestures to make text selection really convenient for jailbroken iOS users. You don’t have to play a tedious game every time you want to edit a single alphabet in a whole paragraph once you have SwipeSelection installed on your iPhone or iPad. Read More

NickWrite: A Smart Text Editor For WP7 That Learns From Your Typing Habits

Out of the many reasons that have made me a fan of Windows Phone 7, the stock Messaging app has got to be somewhere near the top of the list. I am not talking about just the Facebook integration it offers (although that is quite awesome). Other things such as the great keyboard and non-intrusive spellcheck make it perfect for someone who texts a lot. I never thought any update, or app, can better WP7’s stock text editing, but NickWrite seems to have done just that! The app is a simple text editor on the surface, but its distinction lies in its ability to learn from the way you type! Of course, you can add new words to WP7’s own text editor’s dictionary, but NickWrite does everything automatically. It essentially starts guessing a sentence as soon as you begin typing it in, and at times, you will be able to finish a sentence without having to type anything after the first couple of words! Sound familiar? The app's predictive abilities have a lot in common with popular Android keyboard replacement SwiftKey X. Read on for details. Read More
