Facebook For iOS Gets Status Icons & Convenient Privacy Controls

The Facebook app for iPhone is adequate enough to keep users away from the service’s desktop version for weeks. If, like me, you rely almost exclusively on Facebook’s app to stay in touch with your friends, then you might be a little confused seeing all the smiley faces and ‘feelings’ in the status updates all over your News Feed. The new status icons were introduced by Facebook in its desktop version a few weeks back, and the iPhone app has been updated with support for them just today. Now you can really let the world know how you are feeling, or what’s your bedside read these days. Apart from this major change, the update has also brought more easily accessible privacy controls and the ability to conveniently forward images received in messages. There's still no hashtag search and visibility, though. Read More

View & Post To All Social Networks From One Place With Fuse For iPhone

With social networking sites introducing new features on an almost weekly basis, our online lives are finally going towards being streamlined. You can simultaneously post on Twitter and Facebook, while popular photo sharing apps like Instagram come with some impressive social media integration as well. When everything is converging, it seems reasonable to have services that are capable of combining your social networks without making you leave any of them. In the past, we have covered a few such services like Yoono for web and Cloze for iOS, but such services very rarely offer a news feed that truly combines updates from all of your accounts. Even if they do, the whole thing is often a complete mess and you end up missing several important posts. Fuse: Social takes care to keep things simple while offering a feed combining posts from Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Rather than just showing updates, what sets Fuse apart is that it even lets you use almost every major feature of these social networks. Read More

Eventiles Auto-Creates Contextual Albums Out Of Your iPhone Photos

You might not see it all the time, but every photo snapped using an iOS device has some EXIF data associated with it. If you have a jailbroken device, there are some ways of viewing these EXIF properties within the stock Photos app, but we have seen in the past that apps like Handy Album can put this information to even better use. Eventiles is somewhat similar to Handy Album, but has expanded the concept even further. With this iPhone app, you don’t need to perform any manual work, as it generates neat albums out of all the photos present in your device’s camera roll. The albums created by Eventiles use location and time data associated with pictures to group them together, and the app is even smart enough to assign suitable titles to these collections. As an added bonus, you get to apply beautiful filers to entire albums with a single tap, which can be really useful if you want to share the collection over your social network later. Read More

Sleep Genius For iPhone Manages Your Nap Cycles Based On Scientific Research

Science might be able to phase out sleep to some extent in the future, but for now we need to take a nap whenever reinvigoration of the body and mind is needed. If your daily sleep is cut short by even a few hours, the entire day is largely affected. There are plenty of smartphone apps that claim to help users fall asleep, but Sleep Genius appears to be taking a completely reasonable approach to the problem. It doesn't make claims that are as lofty as the ones made by Dream:ON, but isn't as mundane as the previously covered Bedtime Help either. With Sleep Genius running on your iPhone, you can get a good night’s sleep thanks to the sound effects and ambient music it provides. Anyone who is in the habit of taking power naps is sure to love the app, since it has a whole menu dedicated to these short sleep spells. Even when it comes to waking up, Sleep Genius is different from its competitors, as it wakes you up gradually over the course of five minutes. Read More

Identify & Scrobble Music The Social Way On Android & iOS With #nwplyng

Although Shazam has gained a host of social features with the passage of time, it is still a far cry from some of the services that are designed exclusively for sharing your taste in music with friends. #nwplyng combines scrobbling and song identification in a really organized manner, but there is more to this app than just that. There are a number of ways you get to share your choices with your friends. You can search for a song on YouTube and post it to your feeds, identify it using your device’s speaker, or simply enjoy the tracks shared by people you follow. #nwplyng is available for both Android and iOS, and works identically on both platforms. Other than a neat commenting system, #nwplyng also offers a collection of badges that can be unlocked by accomplishing different targets related to the app’s usage. Read More

Minutely For iPhone Offers 3D Weather Maps & Per-Minute Crowdsourced Updates

The concept behind SkyMotion seemed really revolutionary when we covered it back in December. After all, it is pretty cool  to see an app come up with weather forecasts that get live updates after every few minutes. As great as SkyMotion is, it is relying on weather stations to gather all its data. While weather data from different agencies can be pretty accurate, there’s nothing like getting a human being to tell you the weather conditions of a city. We have seen this idea put to good use in Ourcast, which uses crowdsourcing in conjunction with weather data from professional sources to bring users the most accurate weather reports from around the world. The team behind Ourcast has now gone a step further by releasing a new app by the name of Minutely. This app is pretty similar to Ourcast but with Minutely, you get stats like the exact time when it is expected to start raining in your area, or the time remaining until the rain finally stops. In addition to all that, you also get 3D weather maps that look stunning and show weather conditions at a glance. Read More

Microsoft Office Mobile iPhone Now Available For Download; We Go Hands-On

Microsoft’s Office suite has always been among the most wanted apps on iOS, despite the fact that MS never gave a clear timeframe regarding its release. At one point, there were even rumors that Office for iOS isn’t even being developed, and there are no plans for bringing it to iPhone and iPad. Microsoft’s own mobile OS comes with pretty neat Office integration, which might have been another reason for delaying the release of the tool on other platforms. Having said that, there is no shortage of decent third-party apps for iOS that are capable of handling Office documents, like the previously covered Smart Office 2, but there’s nothing like having an official app for a major service. Completely out of the blue, the wishes of many iOS users have come true and Office Mobile for iOS has finally been released. There is a catch or two though, which we will discuss past the break. Yahoo! Sports Comes To iPad, Gets Better Live Coverage On iOS, Android

Yahoo! might not be the most active publisher on Google Play or the App Store, but apps released by the company rarely disappoint nowadays. Yahoo! Weather, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! News have all been enjoying considerable success on both iOS and Android. When it comes to sports, there are already genre-specific apps like Yahoo! Cricket available, but if you want all the goodies in one place, nothing beats having Yahoo! Sports on your device. The app has the ability to let users define their preferences, so that updates from across different leagues and countries show up in a unified and neat manner. The app has never been bad in the first place, but its latest update might have made it just about perfect. For one thing, the iOS variant is finally optimized for the iPad, and the app also supports logging into a Yahoo! account for anyone who wants to use the Sports app on multiple devices. There is a dedicated section for live games as well, so that you don’t have to jump between different screens to get the latest scores. Read More

Evomail Is A Simple iOS Gmail App With Gestures & Universal Search

Evomail has been around on iPad for quite some time, and has managed to entice many Gmail users because of its clean interface, support for gestures and an array of really useful features. The app is great for users who frequently need to perform a universal search in their Gmail account and efficiently switch between different labels. With apps like Mailbox and Seed Mail already providing tough competition in the genre, it is difficult for an email client to prosper in the App Store without being present across all iDevices. So, it is nice to see that  Evomail has finally arrived on the iPhone, and in addition to sporting a clean UI, it supports even more gestures than the iPad variant. Anyone who is looking for a simple email app that doesn't come with too many bells and whistles is sure to appreciate Evomail. Read More

Create & Manage Collaborative Magazines In Flipboard For Android & iOS

The addition of user-curated magazines to Flipboard seems like a step in the right direction, since many people prefer getting the latest news from ordinary people rather than journalists, as Twitter’s rise to fame has clearly demonstrated. Flipboard’s last update didn’t deal with magazines to a large extent, but now the user-created collections are back in the spotlight. With Flipboard 2.0.3, you can ask anyone to contribute to your magazines. Such collections have multiple curators, with any contributor being able to add new content to the mix whenever they want. To make sure the changes are put to maximum use, Flipboard also pushes notifications whenever a new user invites you to start contributing or adds some new content to a magazine you created. A Complete Summary Of Major New Features & Changes In iOS 7

Apple is known for calling all of their new products "the best ever”, and has been claiming to be the most innovative player in the tech world for a long time. Having said that, a lot of people were a bit disappointed when iOS 6 was released, as despite offering some new features, the update wasn't too different from iOS 5. This summer, however, excitement looked to be on the horizon since several reliable sources from the industry (including some having ties with Apple) revealed that iOS is finally getting a much-needed makeover. The blogosphere has been rife with rumors and speculations regarding iOS 7 - especially its departure from skeuomorphism to a flat design - but just hours before the WWDC 2013 keynote, a few people started claiming that all the rumors regarding iOS 7 have been wrong. Now that the cat is finally out of the bag, we must say that some of the iOS 7 mockups got surprisingly close to the truth. The update has a decidedly flat look, iTunes Radio is finally here and almost all of the stock iOS apps have gone through some degree of change. Read More

Live Score Tennis Might Be The Best Free Tennis Tournament Companion For iPhone

These days, it is the norm for tennis Majors to have their very own official smartphone apps. In the past, we have covered apps for the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, but it can get a bit tedious to download each event’s own app before it commences. There are plenty of generic sports apps that offer tennis coverage, but the stats and features available in such apps are nowhere near as comprehensive as the ones that come with official grand slam apps. Now, however, there is an iOS app that has been designed for tennis fans, but without too much focus on just a single tournament. Live Score Tennis keeps you in the loop regarding your favorite players and all the ongoing events using notifications. The app will get updated with the arrival of each big tournament to highlight features related to that event, and that way, you won’t have to worry about downloading a new app every few months. Read on past the break for more details. Read More

TweetShrink For iOS Uses Shorthand To Squeeze Lengthier Tweets Into The 140-Character Limit

One can certainly understand Twitter’s reasoning behind limiting tweets to 140 characters, but there are times when you just have to say something that refuses to fit inside anything less than 150 or 160 characters. If you are on Android, there are a plethora of apps capable of letting users post tweets that are longer than 140 characters. Owners of the iPhone can enjoy some workarounds to the issue as well, with apps like the previously covered TweetAmplius. If you think about the whole issue though, there is another way of looking at it as well. Rather than bypassing the limit, what if there was some way of somehow bringing your tweet within 140 characters without losing any of its meaning? This is the approach adopted by TweetShrink for iPhone. The app uses an intelligent algorithm to reduce the word count of tweets before they are posted to your account. Read More

VSCO Cam Is A Flat-UI iPhone Camera App With Great Filters & Its Own Sharing Network

VSCO Cam might not be as feature-rich as Camera+ or as gorgeous as Blux Camera but there is still something about this app that sets it apart from all of its competitors. For one thing, it is one of the first camera replacement apps for iPhone that have a flat UI. It doesn’t lack much on the features front either, offering image effects, editing options and full control over the camera while snapping pictures. You can even unlock additional filter packs via in-app purchases, which makes VSCO Cam a perfect photo editor as well as a viable alternative for the stock Camera. The significance of VSCO Cam’s flat UI has increased manifold in the light of Apple’s revelation that iOS 7 is going to be “flat, black and white”. Read More

Readmill For iOS Gets Online Collection Of Free Books & Better Search

When it comes to reading eBooks, if you are looking for an app that provides the perfect ambience, iBooks has no parallels. It doesn't come with too many distracting features, importing files to it is pretty easy, and there are a few nice free books available in the library as well. As has been highlighted by the recent price fixing fiasco though, you might not get books from the iTunes store at best prices. Sure, there are alternatives like Sony’s Reader, but they lack the refined UI and variety on offer in iBooks. Readmill, however, has been around in the App Store for long enough to garner a fan base of its own. The app’s reading screen is great, whereas all of its social aspects make books even more enjoyable. Despite all of its positives though, Readmill has never been known for its own library of books - something that has finally been addressed in the app’s latest update. Not only does Readmill now allow you to download books without using any external sources, but all the books it offers are free as well! Read More

Filedrop Comes To iOS; Allows Cross-Platform AirDrop-Like File Sharing

Filedrop is an app that lets you send files between two Mac, two PCs, or between a Mac and PC, over Wi-Fi. We reviewed the service earlier this year and apart from it providing an AirDrop-like feature between Macs and PCs, the app has an excellent interface as well. At the time of the review, the developers had an iOS and Android app in the pipeline, of which the iOS variant has just been released on the App Store. It’s a free download and every bit as amazing as its desktop counterpart. You can send and receive files from another iOS device or a computer running the respective Filedrop app. From your iOS device, you can share images from your camera roll, clipboard, or the files you've received via Filedrop. Boxer For iPhone Is A Super-Efficient Alternative To The Mailbox App

For an app that has been designed to make your inbox clutter-free and your life easier, Mailbox itself can be accused of coming loaded with too many bells and whistles. There can be no denying the fact that the concept behind the app is great, and the UI looks pretty cool as well, but learning to use it efficiently is not the easiest of tasks. Also, the app treats your messages a bit too much like to-dos, and most users are likely to end up needing a separate email client to use in conjunction with Mailbox. The Mail app from Taskbox has been around in the App Store for some time, and might seem pretty similar to Mailbox upon cursory inspection. The app’s latest update, however, strikes a perfect balance between email management and maintaining a to-do list using the messages you receive. It has also been rebranded to Boxer. Read More

Musyc Combines iPhone Accelerometer & Basic Physics To Create Music

Even if you choose not to splash your cash on the awesomeness of Garage Band, iOS has plenty of third-party music-related apps available as well. All such tools, however, require users to have at least some level of knowledge regarding musical instruments, and not just anyone can create beautiful pieces of music merely by using such apps. There are some options available in the App Store though, which challenge this notion and add unique fun elements to the serious business of music creation. We have already covered a rather unique app by the name of Crossfader, which allows you to remix a bunch of songs simply by moving your iPhone around. Musyc is somewhat similar, but offers a staggering level of detail. The way music is created using this app is slightly different as well, and rather than depending solely upon your device’s accelerometer, Musyc coverts your drawings into snippets of music. Sounds confusing? Read on, and things are sure to become a whole lot clearer. Read More

Gmail For iOS Gets The New Tabbed Inbox & Better Notifications

Due to the competitive nature of the market, it is impossible for even well-established companies like Google to rest on their laurels. This is why Gmail has had some pretty decent updates in the not-so-distant past. Google gives priority to Android apps when it comes to big updates, but iOS is rarely left far behind, as has happened with Gmail’s new tabbed interface and categories. The new inbox was rolled out first for the web version of Gmail, and the Android update was hot on its heels. Today’s Gmail update for iOS brings the app on par with its Android counterpart, as support for the new category-based inbox has been added to it. Gmail’s notification system on iOS has been significantly improved as well, as you can now configure the app to push notifications only for important mails. Read More

How To Use The New Voice Search Feature In Google Chrome For iOS

The revamp of Hangouts, a new Google+ UI and plenty of other exciting announcements were made at this year’s Google I/O, but a lot of people might have forgotten that Chrome has been updated with an awesome new feature as well. Chrome 27 for web and Android now supports voice search, and is also capable of reading out some of the search results for your convenience. iOS was a bit slow in getting Google Now, but the official Google Search app was finally updated with the feature a couple of months back. Following that pattern, some might have assumed Chrome 27 and its awesome voice search won’t arrive for the iPhone for the next few months but surprisingly, the app has been updated a few hours ago and now supports almost all the new features that are available in Chrome for Android.
