Have Your Mac Shut Down, Logout Or More When A Bluetooth Device Is In/Out Of Range

Earlier this year, we reviewed Bluetooth Screen Lock an app worth $1.99 in the Mac App store that locked your Mac whenever a Bluetooth device you had paired with it and added to the app went out of range. For forgetful users, the app presents an excellent way of ensuring you never leave your Mac open for anyone to use. If you’d like a similar but better and free solution, give Blue Butler a try. It is a free Mac app available in the Mac App Store that allows you to assign any power function (Shoutdown, Logout, Restart or Sleep) to be triggered when your Bluetooth device goes in and out of range. In addition to setting power functions, you can also have the app to open any number of files (or AppleScript files to perform a list of actions) when a device goes in and out of range. Compared to the previously reviewed Bluetooth Screen Lock, this app not only offers more functionality, but also has a lot less bugs. Read More

How To Sleep, Restart, Shutdown Windows 8 via Right Click Context Menu

Accessing power options in Windows 8 takes way too many steps. You first drag your mouse to the top right corner to activate Charms, click on Settings, click on Power and then click on Sleep, Shutdown or Restart. This can be reduced to just two steps by using Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts like ALT+F4 or Win+I, but it still isn’t as quick as one would like. With that in mind, SkyKOG on XDA Developers came up with a simple solution: put the Power options in the right click menu. Find how how to apply his ‘hack’ after the jump. Read More

Functional: Log Out, Sleep, Shutdown & Restart OS X From The Dock

The menus on the left in the OS X Menu Bar change when different app windows are selected but the Apple menu doesn’t go anywhere. That little menu gives you access to the System Preferences, Dock preferences, Network Preferences, the App Store, and options to sleep, restart, shut down or log out of the system. There is an alternative way to access most of these functions. The System Preferences, the App Store and the Dock preferences can all be accessed from the Dock itself or, by extension, from the System Preferences. However, there are no native shortcuts for the frequently used power and log out options. That is where Functional comes in. This free Mac app is a combo of four others. It is added to the Dock as a Stack that, when clicked, shows separate buttons for Restart, Log out, Sleep and Shut Down (the four apps in Functional). Clicking each button executes the corresponding action. Read More

PowerDown Enhancer: Disable Or Reconfigure iPhone’s Power Off Menu

The idea of preventing unintended shut down of iOS devices is nothing new, and Cydia tweaks like Archangel make sure that your iPhone doesn’t get powered off in case you are using Gevey SIM or are on a tethered jailbreak. There are many scenarios in which you might wish to keep your device powered on for good, and even if your memory is good enough to never betray you, someone else might grab your phone and shut it down when you are not around. PowerDown Enhancer is a new Cydia tweak that offers about the same functionality as Archangel, but with a few bonus features. Thanks to this tweak you can disable the Power Off menu completely. No matter for how long someone holds down the power button, nothing will happen. If you want to put the menu to good use, rather than just doing away with it completely, it is possible to configure it for options like respring, discreet respring and initiating safe mode.
