Rearrange Windows To A Previously Recorded Layout On Mac With Slate

Small screens don’t usually give you enough room for viewing multiple app windows side by side but a large screen does. Considering how big your screen is, you might be able to arrange two or three windows on it in any sort of arrangement. The only shortcoming with this is that you have to rearrange them each time you launch your apps. This is because while apps do remember their last window size, they don't keep track of their last position on the screen. Mac users on any version above Lion might find this a bigger problem since they have desktop spaces that apps can be assigned to, but the window arrangement is still not remembered. Slate is a free Mac app that partially handles this problem. It remembers the arrangement of windows in a single desktop space, and can restore it provided those apps are running. Read More

Reboot An Android Device Easily From Windows System Tray

Not that it’s impossible or even hard for a user to reboot an Android device into recovery mode, bootloader, or for that matter a simple reboot by pressing one or multiple keys on the device, it’s much cooler and convenient to do it right from a PC if the device is connected to it via USB. Well, it has always been possible to do so, you had ADB commands for the geeks who knew what they were doing, and that required you to set up the Android SDK and what not. There are all in one toolkits available for most of your specific devices as well, but why complicate things? RegawMod Rebooter by regaw_leinad over at XDA-Developers is easily the most simple, nonsense free tool you can greet yourself to for handling all your rebooting needs. The tool needs no ADB or anything to work, but USB drivers for your device are needed. So as soon as you download the tiny 1mb file, you’re good to go. Read More

Best Ways To Send Text & Share Files From Your Mac To Other Devices

One of the most common ways people send files or text is over email or instant messengers. Messengers are excellent if you’re sending text to someone other than yourself, but if you need to send it to yourself or to another system that you might be using, a messenger might not be the best option. As far as sending files to yourself is concerned, you almost always email them. In both scenarios, you’re emailing files because you want them on a different system, but you’re achieving that at the expense of cluttering your email inbox. Here are a few methods where you can send files and text from Mac to any device, i.e., Android, iPhone, iPad, another Mac or a Windows PC. Read More

Converber: Convert Between 2000+ Units From 53 Different Categories

Unit conversion can get a bit confusing, especially with the Standard System being used in the US and Metric System being used elsewhere. Whether the US should adopt the Metric System has been the topic of debate since a long time, but as long as the our friends there continue to use the Standard System, all the rest of the world will have to bear with it. Due to these different systems for unit conversion being used in the world, having a good unit converter is necessary at times. The default calculator included with Windows allows you to convert between some basic units, but if you want a tool to help you in converting a wide range of complex units, try Converber. It is an application for Windows that allows you to convert between 2072 units, divided into 53 different categories. More on Converber after the jump. Read More

AirServer: Comprehensive Mac & PC AirPlay Suite With Screen Mirroring

I’ve never tried to hide my preference for iOS over Android, and for multiple reasons. While both platforms have a healthy share of strengths and weaknesses, iOS offers certain features (natively) that tip the scale, at least for me, in its favor, one of them being AirPlay. The formerly-labeled-AirTunes protocol received a feature and nomenclature overhaul back in 2010, whence it included not just audio, but any kind of media to be streamed to any AirPlay compatible device. Then, with iOS 5, Apple pooled in AirPlay mirroring, allowing you to replicate your supportive iPhone, iPod touch or iPad’s entire screen on the likes of compatible HDTVs, laptops, Macs etc. Speaking of Windows PCs and Macs in this regard, there’s perhaps no shortage of AirPlay apps for both platforms, paid or free, that offer pretty reasonable functionality. That’s why I was not too enthusiastic about AirServer, an AirPlay server application for Mac and Windows that claims to be way ahead of all its peers. Turns out, my skepticism was ill-warranted, as the app clearly blows away all the competition. Read More

WiNToBootic: Drag & Drop ISO Images To Create Bootable USB Drives For Windows Installation

Before the use of USB flash drives to install Windows became common, we could only install Windows on our computers using CDs. At that time, installing an operating system using a USB flash drive sounded like a thing of the future, but today, it is as common as using a CD. Newer versions of Microsoft Windows, like Windows 7, can be installed in two ways: directly from Windows XP and Windows Vista, and by using a bootable USB/CD. If your PC doesn’t have any operating system installed, then you may need a bootable USB drive to boot the system into Windows installation setup. Today, we have an application for you called WiNToBootic, which allows you to make a bootable NTFS USB drive for installing Windows. The application focuses on speed and convenience, allowing you to write ISO images via drag and drop. Furthermore, unlike other bootable USB creators, WiNToBootic provides a Quick Format option, which saves you the time you would've spent performing the operation yourself. More on WiNToBootic after the jump. Picox Is A Third-Party SkyDrive Photo Viewer & Uploader For Android

Microsoft finally released the official SkyDrive desktop client for Windows and Mac (only preview build) yesterday, and with the official mobile clients of the service already available to iOS and Windows Phone users, it’s the Android users who’ve been (yet again) denied an official SkyDrive client for their respective mobile platform. What this means is that Android-using Windows Live account holders still have to look for alternative means to access their SkyDrive cloud content via various third-party apps that are available in the Google Play Store. With the previously reviewed music player, SkyAMP, we’ve already seen a rather satisfactory solution to stream all your SkyDrive audio tracks straight to your Android device. However, what about all those photos that you have saved to your SkyDrive gallery? With Picox, a free third-party online photo viewer for SkyDrive, not only can you browse through all your SkyDrive photos, but upload new ones as well. Read More

Moborobo: The Most Comprehensive Android & iOS Management Tool Yet [Review]

When it comes to official desktop management tools for smartphone platforms, iOS and Windows Phone 7 appear to have a clear edge over Android – they have official applications for that purpose. Irrespective of the fact that both these platforms have a rather crippling dependency on iTunes and Zune, respectively, you get a utility where you can manage pretty much all the aspects of your smartphone with ease, all from a unified interface. This, however, doesn’t imply that Android is lacking, as Google’s brainchild has several great and capable third-party smartphone management tools that efficiently let you manage almost all aspects of your device, across almost all major desktop platforms. We have even reviewed some of those over time, like Android Manager WiFi, AirDroid and Droid Explorer, all of which come with their own unique feature offerings. That said, we still have to come across something as comprehensive as Moborobo, arguably the best all-in-one Android manager that packs quite a punch when it comes to diversity of features. WinPicker: Visually Navigate Between Open Windows & Applications

Most people use Alt + Tab for navigating between open windows or there's also a Win + Tab AeroPeek, introduced in Windows 7; however, it can get a bit confusing if there are a lot of applications open on your desktop. If you have a big screen then it all makes sense to have multiple windows being displayed at the same time, but not everyone has the luxury of huge screen real estate and some people still have those small CRTs. Managing all the open applications and being able to navigate through them is very important for efficiently using your time. Microsoft has also changed the way we switch between currently running applications by replacing the Alt + Tab hotkey menu with Switch List in Windows 8. Previously, we have reviewed some very useful desktop management tools, such as Plumb, an application that arranges the desktop windows automatically as you open them based on a user-specified criteria. It was actually more of an evolved version of AeroSnap, which I found quite handy. Today, I have a another simpler application for Windows called WinPicker that lets you quickly navigate between open windows and applications. Keep reading to find out more about WinPicker. Bamboo: Synchronize Folders, Backup Data, Merge & Tidy Up Folder Pairs

Making backups of important files and folders always helps when the computer suddenly crashes, or when the original data gets corrupted. Last year, we covered Backup Folder Sync, an application for Windows that mirrors selected folders and allows creating backups on any local location, external drive, USB stick, and network mapped drive, and recently, we featured AngryFile, a Dropbox-like file sharing and backup utility that lets you store important files on the cloud. Today, we came across another data backup application called Bamboo, which not only lets you synchronize files & folders, backup data at specified target locations, but also clean, merge and consolidate data from two folders of your choice. We’ve all used free apps and services, and almost all prefer them. More people are likely to try something free because there is no buyer’s remorse, but some of the best apps and services are paid. These paid apps and services aren’t all geared towards productivity; people will even spend money on entertainment-oriented apps like Angry Birds. The really annoying thing about platform loyalty, however, is that you will always love what you’re working with, even if it isn’t worth the love.
