HTC’s DROID DNA is the most technically stunning phone I’ve seen this year. Besides a top-of-the-line quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip clocked at 1.5GHz, it comes with 2GB of RAM, an 8MP/2.1MP camera combo, 4G LTE and a truly awesome 5” Full HD 1080p Super LCD3 display unheard of on smartphones! Those of you interested in buying the smartphone will be glad to know that it has already been rooted, and ClockworkMod Recovery / TWRP recovery have been released for it. Follow our step-by-step guide after the jump for rooting and installing a custom recovery on your DROID DNA! Read More
2011 was a tough year for HTC. As a result of announcing so many phones with a senseless naming scheme and little technical differences between them, the company lost a significant chunk of its market share to Samsung. In 2012, however, the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has reinvented itself by focusing on a smaller, but higher-quality, well-supported, consistently
named lineup called the One
series. The latest phone in the One
series of smartphones – the One X+ – was announced earlier last month and publicly launched a few days ago. With a higher-clocked Tegra 3 chip, improved optics, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, it’s one of the most capable Android smartphones in the market. Those of you who bought it will likely want to root it, for reasons mentioned in our earlier article on why you should root your Android smartphone

A few select HTC and Samsung Android phones have just received an app that lets you flash kernel and recovery images straight from within the Android OS (while booted). The app, called Flash Image GUI
, comes to us from XDA-Developers forum member joeykrim
, and is basically a GUI interface for the Linux binary. The app can flash kernels, logos, and recoveries on the Samsung Moment, Intercept and Acclaim. Devices like the Samsung Epic however can only flash the kernels (zImage). The HTC Amaze 4G, EVO 3D CDMA & GSM, EVO, EVO Shift, Nexus S / Nexus S 4G and the LG Optimus get to flash kernels (anykernel & boot.img) and recoveries (zip or image files).
Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 devices have been termed as the last hope for the Mango platform. This is for the reason that Nokia has been granted the permission by Microsoft to tinker with the operating system, and there are some exclusive Nokia apps available in the Nokia Store section of the Marketplace (like Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and the CNN app). Some of these apps have been in great demand by users, and it’s a shame seeing them unavailable for other devices. However, if your device is developer unlocked (a piece of cake now for Samsung devices, due to the latest WindowsBreak tool
), you can exchange your OEM app store with any other OEM Marketplace of your choice. Read on to learn all about the homebrew which will let you do that.
Android devices can be rooted, and iOS gets jailbroken, but what about Windows Phone 7? The equivalent of rooting and jailbreak for WP7 is known as developer unlock. You might own a device that has really been unlocked by Microsoft because you are a developer, or have employed one of the other ways of unlocking a WP7
. But after Mango, even if you have a developer unlocked WP7 device, you still don’t get root access on it. That is because of the introduction of a new unlock privilege level named interop unlock. If you don’t have interop unlock, some XAP files might not run on your device, and there are other restrictions as well. Previously, there were hacks that allowed Samsung and LG users to upgrade to interop if they already had a dev unlock. Now, the hack is almost universal. Recently, an exploit for HTC devices was discovered as well. Read on to find out how you can get your developer unlocked HTC WP7 upgraded to interop unlock.
HTC Android devices, be they older ones or the relatively newer ones, continue to be supported by the Android developer community. RootzWiki forum member eFrigid
who has recently released an all one one root, unroot, S-Off, bootloader, unlock / re-lock, etc tool for the HTC devices. Such tools are greatly needed especially when users find it hard an tedious to surf through webpages on instructions on how to achieve a certain objective on their device. Tools like these pretty much act like a one click solution to all your pre and post root needs, and this is exactly what eFrigid
has attempted to do here. The tool named, HTC Super Tool
, makes use of different exploits, packed in one convenient package.
Previously we discussed a pre-rooted ROM flashing method that helped in gaining permanent root privileges on HTC Amaze 4G. xBoarder56, senior XDA member and Recognized Developer, has release a One Click Perm Root tool for HTC Amaze 4G that makes the process really simple. The tool has been verified and apparently this script also deploys ZergRush exploit but with lesser bricking chances. the script comes in form a .bat file meaning you will need a PC to make this work. In addition to this, you will need to have an unlocked bootloader for this script to permanently root your Amaze 4G. If this isn’t the case, then you will get a temporary root only. Read More

There isn’t a Chevron-like unlock for Windows Phone 7’s latest update Mango just yet. There are some lengthy and overly complex procedures out there, but a vast majority of users won’t even dream of going near them as Mango is pretty good in itself with a lot of features users have wanted for a long time
. However, if you still want something new and improved on your device, and are brave enough to risk your HD7, there’s a new custom ROM out now by the name of DeepShining. You don’t need to have a jailbroken device to flash this ROM, just follow the procedure described past the break. Read More
Microsoft might have struck a deal with Nokia, making it their favorite hardware manufacturer, but HTC hasn’t given up on Windows Phone 7 by any means. The latest proof of HTC’s commitment to the metro platform is the spike in apps released for Mango and the renovated HTC Hub (which has lost its excess graphics and added greater functionality). HTC Dock Mode,
available in the HTC app zone of the Marketplace, is a free
app that essentially turns your phone into a side-table clock and music player in the time that it’s charging or not in use. The app is particularly useful if you have a charging dock for your HTC Windows Phone or your phone has a kick stand (like the HD7) . Although the app is called Dock Mode, your device doesn’t necessarily have to be docked to use this app. All you need is an HTC device running on Mango and you’ll be able to use this app.
Android, being an open source platform, enjoys a lot of privileges over Windows Phone 7 and even iOS. Not the least important of such superiorities is the (wireless) internet tethering support in Android which allows you to turn your device into a mobile hotspot. As of now, WP7 does not allow this. Even with Mango, the metro OS isn’t getting this feature. But what Microsoft denies its users, the hackers provide in a heartbeat. There have been ways to enable USB tethering for WP7, as discussed here
. But some of those methods were too device-specific, while some were buggy at best. However, for all the unlocked HTC users out there, there’s now a safe and working solution to get USB tethering support for their phones. The best thing about this app is that it does not involve too many overly complicated configuration steps, and anyone can use it to share their mobile internet with a computer.
HTC Sensation XE is the officially announced Android phone that will come packed with awesomeness of Beats Audio along with a blazing 1.5 GHz Dual Core processor. The phone is set to launch with custom made Beats handset that has been engineered to output extra ordinary sound and audio playback. The Android firmware on top will be modified to deliver the best audio user experience. And on top of that, the phone is set to carry a sleek aluminum body with pinches of red complementing the looks. Although that phone has been only announced and hasn’t been released yet, but underground Android community is already at work with a leaked system dump that allegedly belongs of HTC Sensation XE. The development of this leaked firmware has reached a point where HTC Sensation users can actually convert their phones into Sensation XE and take max advantage of Beats Audio!
HTC Wildfire S was launched couple of months back as a mid-tier Android phone targeted at users who like it sleek and simple. However the worst part of this phone is that there is no solution, until now, to unlock bootloader or gain S-OFF. Majority of these phones have been shipped with S-ON making it real difficult to flash custom ROMs or kernels. However there are a lucky few who have managed to get HTC Wildfire S with factory unlocked S-OFF status. And if you are one of those lucky few who already have S-OFF on your device, then there is some great news for you. Alquesz, Senior XDA Member, has recently released a fixed version of unofficial ClockworkMod Recovery for the device. The earlier, work-in-progress, versions of this recovery usually came with a color glitch. All of that has been fixed and now all you need is a S-OFF Wildfire S to flash this custom recovery.
HTC myTouch 4G Slide emerged as a high-tier Android device but wasn’t able to gain much popularity due to thin participation of underground developer community. The phone was rooted after couple of hours of its release but the ROM and custom kernel development have been moving at a snail’s speed. The main reason behind this lack of dev interest is unreleased kernel sources which are direly required to cook custom bacon for any Android phone or tab. Lately Undeadk9, Senior XDA Member, has managed to tweak the stock kernel in order to enhance user experience and save battery. The kernel doesn’t offer any overclocking or undervolting options and the main crux of this release is to make the phone work better while on stock firmware / ROM. Read More
Maybe it’s the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft which has fired HTC up and compelled their Windows Phone 7 developers to become hyperactive in the Marketplace or maybe it’s because the release of Mango is nearly upon us. Whatever the reason, it’s the WP7 community who is benefiting from the latest flurry of free apps released by HTC. Just a few days back, we covered an app named Attentive Phone
which was also from HTC, and now Locations
has entered the Marketplace with the intention of providing Mango users with an easy way to find their way!
HTC Runnymede is the new high-tier Android phone that is set to be released in November or December this year. However some industrious hackers have already got their hands of the leaked official firmware of this phone. The result of this, like always, is that Android hackers and developers at different Android portals , blogs and forums are hard at work to cook Runnymede firmware based ROMs for their devices. Runnymede firmware / official RUU comes with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread running HTC Sense 3.5 UI. For those who don’t know, HTC Sense 3.5 UI is a Sense 3.0 successor and comes loaded with extra widgets, lockscreen accessible apps and homescreen portrait compatibility. As of now, HTC Sense 3.5 has managed to gather a massive fan base owing to enhanced utility and beautiful looks. Read More
In case you are using HTC Sensation, Inspire 4G or Desire HD and want your GPS to lock under 10 seconds, then there is some great news for you. Senior XDA member, crypted, has developed a GPS optimization scripts that initially improved GPS locking in North America and was later made compatible to support worldwide geographic locations. Majority of the users who have deployed this patch on their HTC devices have managed to get GPS lock within 10 seconds. Read More
