SearchAmplius Upgrades iOS Spotlight Search With Results From More Apps

Towards the end of last year, we covered a Cydia tweak by the name of SLightEnhancerSearch, which makes the experience of using Spotlight search even more productive than it currently is. By default, Spotlight can be used to look for results originating from messages, emails, apps and some other areas of iOS. SLightEnhancerSearch makes it possible for Spotlight to look inside additional sources, and come up with a more rich results page. Having said that, the tweak didn’t integrate too well with Spotlight, and some of the sections were only shortcuts to the relevant apps. The newly released SearchAmplius, however, suffers from no such shortcomings. The tweak adds results for Cydia, YouTube, App Store, Calculator and a few other sources to Spotlight in a way that seems completely native to iOS. Since this increases the number of sections available in Spotlight a great deal, you may also want to use SearchCollapse in conjunction with it, which lets you minimize any Spotlight category with a single tap.

SearchAmplius and SearchCollapse can be used independently, but if you install them both on your device, they share a menu in the stock Settings app. SearchCollapse lets you collapse any section of Spotlight whenever you touch its left margin. In addition to that, you can choose to always make the results show up in their collapsed form by default, or collapse all results except the top one in each category.

Although the default configuration of SearchAmplius is pretty good, you can tinker with it a little to make things just the way you want. Inside the ‘Extensions’ section of the tweak’s menu, it is possible to change the order in which the sections appear in Spotlight. The developer has advised users to keep the SearchAmplius sections near the bottom, as some of them require access to the internet and won’t work properly without it. It is also possible to choose the number of results you want each section to display, and there is a separate entry for every section in the tweak’s menu just for this purpose.

The results displayed inside Spotlight search launch in Safari or the appropriate app installed on your iPhone that’s associated with the item you’re opening.

SearchAmplius costs $2.99 and SearchCollapse is worth $0.99. Both tweaks are available in the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store, and are compatible only with iOS 6 and later.
