Codepoints: Search & Copy Unicode Characters To Mac Clipboard

Whether you’re a developer or a simple user, there comes a time when you might need to use unicode characters and something gets in your way. Developers might need them as part of their syntax, and an ordinary user might need them to swear on a public forum. In the event that entering such characters has been disabled or you aren’t quite sure how to type them, you have Codepoints, a Mac app worth $2.99 in the Mac app store that not only lets you search among over 20,000 unicode characters, but also copy them to your clipboard. The app sits in the menu bar and you can toggle the app window via keyboard shortcut.

Note: Codepoints is a paid app that will set you back by $2.99 in the Mac App Store. AddictiveTips is giving away five promo codes to our readers, details for which can be found at the end of this post.

When you launch the app, it adds a simple button, the letter U with a plus sign, to the menu bar. Click this button and the app window will open. The search bar at the top lets look up unicode characters by name and displays the results as you type. To select a character, click it, and it will be copied to your clipboard (no Command + C necessary). You can then paste it anywhere you like. Often, you will come across apps where you need to use one of these characters but input via keyboard is not supported. You can use this app to paste the character instead.

To set a shortcut for toggling the app, click the shortcut bar at the very bottom of the app window and type the key combination you want to set as the shortcut. While the app is mostly useful for developers, it might come in handy if your text editor gets buggy.
