Drink It Smart is not a productivity app, it isn’t going to help you check emails faster, it certainly isn’t going to help you take better selfies, and it certainly will not help you find a great place for drinks. Drink It Smart is an iOS app worth $0.99 in the App Store that is aimed at social good, or better at helping us check ourselves when we’ve been drinking. The app is tailored to estimate the blood alcohol level for someone who has been drinking. It customizes results based on genders and weight which the user inputs. As you consume more drinks, you add it up in the app and it tells you just how drunk you are and what your behaviour in this current state is likely to be.
Note: The developer is giving away 14 promo codes for Drink It Smart to our valued readers. Details for participating in the giveaway are at the end of this post.
Drink it smart launches with the blood alcohol level set to zero. Before you get started, you need to select your gender and your weight. Tap the little info button at the bottom right. Select your gender and add your weight in either kilos or pounds and then tap ‘Back’.
With your gender and weight entered, you can return to the home screen and commence your drinking. After a drink, tap the little plus sign and then select what sort of drink you’ve had. You can choose from four drink types; long drink, a shot, a beer, or Wine. Tap the plus sign next to a drink and it will be recorded as one glass of that type of drink. Notice that the app will not let you consume 10 drinks first and then add them all at once. Drinks are recorded one-by-one and this may encourage the user to realize just how many drinks they’ve already had. After you add each drink, the blood alcohol level is updated and the app lists which body functions will be affected. It also suggest some likely behaviour that you may exhibit in your current state.
As you add more and more drinks, the behaviour and alcohol level are updated. That is all there is to the app. A few improvements that would make it better is a big red alert that tells you that you are no longer fit to drive, and a small UI improvement that allows users to read the full name of the drink type they are adding. I have personally never consumed alcohol in my life so people who do drink can perhaps better suggest if the list of drink types should be richer but the concept of the app is excellent in itself. Users should also note that the blood alcohol measurements are precise but can still vary in actuality. Additionally, if you take any sort of medication, the reading may not be accurate for you.
