Get The Mac OS X Mountain Lion Notification Center On Your iPad [Cydia]

The iPad Notification Center hasn’t been able to attract as many admirers as its iPhone counterpart. Many people have issues with the NC’s size on the tablet’s larger screen. Until recently, there were similar concerns about the size of notification banners on iPad, but NCPad for jailbroken iPad (reviewed here) resolved that problem by stretching notification banners to the width of the tablet’s screen. MountainLionCenter does roughly the same thing for Notification Center on iPad. It optimizes the NC for your tablet, copying the notification management system billed to be used in Mac OS X Mountain Lion. This means that once you install this Cydia tweak on your jailbroken iPad, NC will appear on the right of your screen, spanning the whole height of the display, rather than the usual half.

To give you the complete tablet notification experience on your iPad, the tweak automatically installs NCPad as well (if you don’t have it already), optimizing both Notification Center and banners. MountainLionCenter replaces the original NC (and its launching gesture) with its own, so you won’t be able to view notifications the old way once you’re done installing it. The tweak doesn’t provide any customization options. In fact, the only way to disable it is to uninstall it from the system.

So, how exactly do you launch your new Mountain Lion-like Notification Center? Instead of swiping downwards from the status bar, MountainLionCenter has to be launched by swiping in from the right edge of the screen with two fingers. Admittedly, this new two-fingered gesture isn’t as easy as the original one, but once you get used to it, you aren’t likely to run into too many problems. The actual looks and the management of notifications will remain unchanged; the Notification Center will just span the full height of the iPad’s screen (both in landscape and portrait modes).

MountainLionCenter is an awesome tweak, but the gesture assigned to it isn’t all that convenient, and you might need multiple tries to launch the Notification Center. Fortunately, this problem can be easily solved with the help of Activator (just assign an easier gesture to Activate Notification Center under System Actions). The tweak does bring something refreshingly new to your jailbroken iPad, and for that, it is completely worth a download. MountainLionCenter is a free tweak available in the BigBoss repo. Please note that it will only work properly with iPads that are on iOS 5.1 or later (crashes on older versions of iOS).
