How to fix Firestick won’t connect to Wi-Fi

TV sticks are a great way to watch content without relying on a mobile or desktop device. A device like the Firestick comes with its own remote making it the perfect device for a TV. TV sticks stream online content. They can be set to work with a local media server but in order to stream from it, it must still be connected to the network the server is on.

Firestick won’t connect to Wi-Fi

Fix Firestick won’t connect to Wi-Fi

If your Firestick cannot connect to a WiFi network, you won’t be able to stream anything since the device has no on-board storage. Without an internet connection, it is useless.

Before you try resolving problems with the Firestick;

  • Restart your router. Make sure the lights on it are stable.
  • Check if other devices are able to connect to the WiFi network. If no device is able to connect to it, the problem is likely with your connection or your router.
  • Check if you have internet connectivity. Connect to the WiFi network from a different device e.g. a phone, and check if you’re able to browse. If not, the Firestick may simply be dropping the connection because it isn’t working. Contact your ISP to resolve the connection problem.

If other devices are able to connect to the WiFi network, but the Firestick cannot, follow the steps below to fix the problem.

1. Power cycle the Firestick

Restarting the Firestick can resolve many problems with it, including connectivity issues.

  1. Disconnect the power source for the Firestick.
  2. Turn your router off.
  3. Wait 10-15 seconds.
  4. Turn the router on and wait for the lights on it to stabilize (stop blinking).
  5. Connect the power source for the Firestick and turn it on.

2. Manually connect to the network

Firestick may not be connecting to the network. This can happen if the signal from the network is weak. manually select the network and connect to it.

  1. Connect the Firestick to your TV and turn it On.
  2. Use the remote and select Settings.
  3. Go to Network.
  4. Select the network and wait for it to connect.

3. Check WiFi signal

If your wireless router is too far from the Firestick, it may not connect to the wireless network. Try to move the router closer. Make sure that there is nothing interfering with the signal. If you cannot move the router, consider using a WiFi repeater or an extender.

Remember that the Firestick won’t have the same range as other devices e.g., a phone may be able to connect to a weak signal from the router but the Firestick may reject it.

4. Change HDMI port

The Firestick plugs into an HDMI port in the back of a TV. Many sets have more than one HDMI port. If your TV has another HDMI port available, disconnect the Firestick and connect it to a different HDMI port. Problems with the port can cause connection problems.

5. Use Ethernet

The Firestick needs to connect to a network but it doesn’t necessarily have to be a wireless network. A wireless network is easier to connect to but you can connect to the network Ethernet. You will need to buy an adapter to establish the connection but it will more reliable than a wireless connection.

Conclusion

Many users complain their Firestick cannot connect to a WiFi network. This is a long-standing problem with the TV stick that’s led many users to abandon it in favor of other devices. Make sure your Firestick (and your TV) aren’t set too far away from the router and you should be able to connect to a network easily.
