Best Kodi Add-ons for HD and 4K Movies That Work in 2017

The open-source media center Kodi has helped transform movie and TV viewing into a fast, portable, and convenient way to kick back and relax. The most powerful part of the Kodi experience are unofficial add-ons, which are extensions made by third-party developers that enable live sports, broadcast channels, on-demand TV shows, and much more. Most of these add-ons put a priority on HD and 4K movies, but there are a few that deliver high-quality content you have to see to believe.

Before Using Kodi, Get a Good VPN

Kodi is open-source and both free and legal to use. Unofficial add-ons may not adhere to the same set of standards as official software, however. Some have been discovered linking to pirated content and illegal sources, which caused a stir with rights holders and movie studios alike. As a result, Kodi is under close scrutiny right now, causing a number of ISPs to throttle Kodi traffic or even send out copyright infringement notices to streaming users.

You can protect yourself against these threats by using a virtual private network. VPNs build a private tunnel between your device and the internet, encrypting everything you send out to make it unreadable to third parties. ISPs won’t know what you’re streaming or where it came from, which means they can’t throttle your downloads. With a VPN in place you’re free to stream HD and 4K Kodi movies in complete privacy. All you have to do is choose a reliable VPN, run it in the background, and enjoy.

In addition to making your HD Kodi movies private, VPNs also come with the following benefits:

  • Stream videos from other countries using Netflix, HBO Go, BBC iPlayer, and more
  • Stop websites and government agencies from tracking your activity
  • Protect your data while traveling or using public Wi-Fi hotspots
  • Unblock censored websites and geo-restricted content
  • Download all of Kodi’s add-ons safely and securely

Evaluating the Best VPN for Kodi

Choosing the best VPN to use with Kodi can be a daunting experience. As soon as you dive in you find a sea of information to sort through and compare, everything from security protocols to server locations and logging policies. We’ve made the process a little easier by including a few recommended VPN services below. Our selections were made based on the following criteria, ensuring you get the fastest and the most private 4K streaming experience possible.

  • Fast download speeds – If you’re watching HD or 4K movies on Kodi, you’re going to need all the speed you can get. VPNs are known for being a little sluggish compared to a standard internet connection, so finding a service that puts a high priority on fast downloads is an absolute must.
  • Zero-logging policy – Simply put: your privacy is never guaranteed if a VPN keeps logs. To make sure nothing you do is recorded or shared with outside agencies, make sure your VPN has a strict zero-logging policy on all traffic.
  • Bandwidth restrictions – Lower-quality VPNs often put caps on the amount of bandwidth you can consume or the speed at which you can download. If this is the case, you’ll find your HD Kodi streams will chew through your allocation in just a few days. Unlimited bandwidth is essential for a good VPN.
  • Allowed traffic – Many of Kodi’s 4K/HD streaming add-ons rely on P2P network or torrent protocols to deliver their content. VPNs occasionally block both types of traffic, which can leave you without your precious movies and TV shows.
  • Software and app compatibility – In order to take advantage of your VPN, you need to run custom software on the same device as Kodi. Since Kodi works on such a wide variety of hardware, it’s important to make sure your VPN is compatible, too.

How to Install Kodi Add-ons

To help make add-ons easier to find, install, and keep up to date, the Kodi community has bundled groups of them together into zip files called repositories. A repository holds anywhere from a dozen to a few thousand add-ons, letting you pick and choose which ones you want to install from a menu. Kodi offers a variety of ways to add repositories to your system, but we prefer the “external sources” method, as it keeps things tidy in the long run. You’ll need to change a setting in Kodi before you can do this, however. Follow the steps below to get started:

  1. Open Kodi and click on the gear icon to enter the System menu.
  2. Go to System Settings > Add-ons
  3. Toggle the slider next to the “Unknown sources” option.
  4. Accept the warning message that pops up.

With Kodi’s options ready to go, your next task is to find a repository source URL and add it to Kodi’s file manager. Install the repo from there, then navigate through the menus, pick your repository, and start checking out all the new add-ons. It seems like a convoluted way to add new content, but once you install a few repos, it’ll become second nature. Our guides walk you through the process from beginning to end to make things a bit easier.

Note: The third-party add-ons mentioned below link to a wide variety of constantly changing content and sources, making it impossible to verify the integrity and legality of each one. Addictive Tips does not condone or encourage any violation of copyright restrictions. Please consider the law, victims, and risks of piracy before accessing copyrighted material without permission.

The extension includes a staggering variety of content, pulling together classic TV shows, kids’ content, sports, live TV, and all the movies you can handle both new and old. 4K streaming fans will appreciate the entire section dedicated to 4K/HD and 3D movies. It’s one of the few add-ons that separates high-quality content from the rest, making it easy to jump in and enjoy.

FliXanity – HD Movies All Around

HD content is included alongside the standard features and, unfortunately, won’t be available for all movies at all times. FliXanity does a great job updating with as many HD streams as possible, which is great for anyone with a fast internet connection and a love for high-quality content.

Bennu – Phoenix Reborn

To use Bennu you’ll need to install a reliable repository. The Cazwall repo is one of the better sources for the latest Bennu release. Follow the steps below to install Cazwall. If you already have the repo, skip to step 14.

How to install Bennu on Kodi:

  1. Open Kodi on your local device
  2. Click on the gear icon to enter the System menu
  3. Go to File Manager > Add Source (you may need to click the double-dot to move to the top of the directory)
  4. Type in the following URL exactly as it appears: http://repo.cazwall.com/sc/
  5. Name the new repository “.cazwall”. The decimal isn’t necessary, but it makes it easier to locate later on
  6. Click “OK”
  7. Go back to the Kodi main menu
  8. Select “Add-ons”
  9. Click the open box icon at the top of the menu bar
  10. Choose “Install from Zip File”
  11. Select “.cazwall”
  12. Open the folder marked “Repository (Click Here)”
  13. Install the file named repository.simplycaz-####.zip
  14. Go to the Add-ons menu and click the open box icon
  15. Choose “Install from repository”
  16. Find and click “.cazwall”
  17. Go to “Video add-ons” or your repo’s equivalent folder
  18. Choose “Bennu” and install the add-on

Bennu is a relative newcomer to the Kodi add-ons scene, but it’s already turning some heads with its wide selection of content. Bennu aims to take the place of Phoenix, an add-on that disappeared when TVAddons was shut down. To this end, Bennu cobbles together a wide variety of streams, including content for kids, live TV channels, movies, and full TV series. Bennu doesn’t section off HD or 4K content from the rest of its offerings, which can lead to some accidental SD stream downloads. What it lacks in organization it more than makes up for in variety, however.

Other Movie and TV Streaming Add-ons

Not getting enough streaming TV and movies in your life? You don’t have to limit yourself to HD/4K quality content! Some of Kodi’s best add-ons pull videos from around the web, providing access to incredible niche content, popular media, and everything in-between. Below are a few of our favorite add-ons that will provide countless hours of entertainment.

Having Trouble Seeing HD/4K Content?

One of the biggest benefits of the Kodi environment is the wealth of options at your disposal. There’s always a method to sort, tweak, and configure the experience to your liking, even with third-party add-ons. One downside is some features disappear at the bottom of the pile, cutting off extras you didn’t even know you were missing out on.

Several Kodi add-ons will disable 4K content by default. It’s easy to switch it back on, however. If you can’t see the HD or 4K video lists you’re supposed to be seeing, or if supposedly hi-def streams look grainy, follow the steps below to change the options for each individual add-on.

  1. Open Kodi and go to the “Add-ons” section
  2. Find the add-on that contains HD/4K streaming content and open its launch menu
  3. Click or tap on the box at the bottom that says “Configure”
  4. Tap the button the left that reads “Playback”
  5. Look about a third of the way down on the options that appear and find “Max Quality”
  6. Tap the arrows until it says “4k”
  7. Tap “OK” and open the add-on. Your HD content should be available now

Some add-ons won’t have this 4K filtering option. There’s also a chance your device can’t handle HD content, especially if you’re watching on a smartphone or another portable device.

Is it Safe to Install Unofficial Kodi Add-ons?

The Kodi app itself is safe, open source, and free. The add-ons you can find and install won’t necessarily follow that same philosophy, however. Third-party products aren’t verified by the Kodi team, and a few have been discovered carrying malware or links to pirated content. It’s not a common occurrence, but it happens often enough that you should take precautions when downloading and streaming through Kodi.

When adding extensions to Kodi, make sure you stick with reputable repository sources. The repo groups do most of the verification work for the community to help keep bad add-ons away from the public. We also download and verify each add-on featured in our articles, so if they’re listed above, they’re good to go. To be on the safe side, always keep your anti-virus and firewall features turned on, and when you start streaming make sure you use a VPN to keep your activity private.
