How to play Dishonored on Linux

Dishonored is an action/stealth video game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It focuses on Corvo Attano, a royal assassin, as he fights his way through the plagued city of Dunwall.

In 2012, Dishonoered was released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Later it was released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, it was not ported to Linux.

If you’re eager to play as Corvo Attano on your Linux PC, you’ll need to get the Windows version working on Linux. Here’s how to do it.

Getting Dishonored working

Dishonored best works on Linux via Proton and Steam Play. To use Proton/Steam Play, you must install the Linux Steam app. Open up a terminal window by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T or Ctrl + Shift + T on the keyboard and follow the command-line installation instructions outlined below that corresponds with the Linux OS you currently use.

Ubuntu

The Ubuntu operating system has the latest release of Steam in their software repositories. To install it, simply enter the following Apt command in a terminal.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

Sadly, Debian Linux does not carry Steam in its “main” software repository, as it is not open-source software. If you want to install Steam on Debian, the easiest way is to download the DEB package from the internet and install it manually. To get it working, enter the commands below.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb
sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

Arch Linux

Arch Linux users will be able to get Steam working via the following pacman command in a terminal window.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

Both Fedora and OpenSUSE users will have a bit of trouble getting Steam working from their operating system’s primary software repositories. For this reason, we highly recommend following the Flatpak installation instructions instead.

Flatpak

Steam is available as a Flatpak app in the Flathub app store. To install the Flatpak version of Steam on your Linux PC, you’ll need the Flatpak runtime installed and configured. To get the Flatpak runtime working, follow our guide on the subject.

Once the Flatpak runtime is set up on your Linux PC, add the Flathub app store to your Flatpak sources using the flatpak remove-add command below.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

With the Flathub app store added to your Flatpak sources, Steam can be installed using the flatpak install command below.

flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam

With Steam installed on your system, open the app up by searching for “Steam” in the app menu on your Linux desktop. Then, follow the step-by-step instructions below to get Dishonored working on your system.

Step 1: Locate the “Steam” menu and click on it with the mouse. Then, find the “Settings” option and click on it with the mouse to access Steam settings.

Step 2: Inside of Steam settings, find “Steam Play” and click on it. Then, in the “Steam Play” menu, click on the box next to “Enable Steam Play for supported titles”. Be sure also to check the box next to “Enable Steam Play for all other titles.”

Step 3: Click the “OK” button in Steam settings to close the settings window.

Step 4: Find “Store” and click on it to access the Steam storefront. On the Steam storefront, click on the search box and type in “Dishonored.” Look through the search results for “Dishonored” and click on it to go to the game’s Steam page.

Step 5: On the Dishonored game page, click on “Add to cart” to purchase the game.

Step 6: Find the “Library” button in Steam and click on it to navigate to your Steam library. Once there, find the search box and click on it. Then, type “Dishonored” to search your library for the game.

Step 7: Select “Dishonored” in the Steam library search results to access its Steam library page.

Step 8: On Dishonored’s library page, find the blue “INSTALL” button and click on it with the mouse. Selecting “INSTALL” will allow Steam to download and install the game on your computer. Be patient.

Step 9: When Steam finishes downloading and installing Dishonored on your Linux PC, the blue “INSTALL” button will turn into a green “PLAY” button. Click on the “PLAY” button to start up Dishonored on your Linux PC.

When Dishonored starts up on your Linux PC, Steam will launch a compatibility tool to configure the game to run on Linux. Sit back and allow it to configure the game. When the configuration is complete, you’ll be ready to enjoy Dishonored!

Troubleshooting Dishonored

Dishonored works very well on Linux thanks to the power of Proton and Steam Play. While playing it, you shouldn’t run into any problems. If, for some reason, an issue does happen, consult with the Dishonored ProtonDB page. It’ll help you troubleshoot your issue, and report it to help others.
