Just Cause 3 on Linux

Just Cause 3 works reasonably well on Linux. However, the only way to get it working is with Proton and Steam Play, key features of the Linux version of Steam. So, to install Just Cause 3, we need to install Steam for Linux.

Install Steam

To start the installation of Steam for Linux, open up a terminal window on the desktop. You can open up a terminal window by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard or by searching for “Terminal” in the app menu and opening it that way.

Once the terminal window is open and ready to use, follow the installation instructions that correspond with the Linux OS you currently use.

Ubuntu

On Ubuntu Linux, you can get Steam up and running with the following Apt install command below.

sudo apt install steam

Debian

On Debian Linux, the best way to install Steam is by downloading the DEB package directly to your home folder using the wget command, rather than installing the one included in the OS software sources.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

When the download is complete, the Steam DEB package will be in your home folder, ready for installation. At this point, use the dpkg command to install the Steam package on your Debian PC.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

When the installation of Steam on Debian is complete, you’ll need to correct the dependency issues that may have appeared. To fix the problems, use the apt-get install -f command to install it.

sudo apt-get install -f

Arch Linux

Steam is available for installation on Arch Linux through the “multilib” software repository. This repository must be enabled before installing Steam. To enable it, open up the /etc/pacman.conf file in your favorite text editor.

Once the file is open, find the “multilib” section, and remove the # symbol from in front of it, along with the lines directly below it. Then, save the edits and close the editor. Re-sync pacman using the command below.

sudo pacman -Syy

Using the command below, get the latest release of Steam up and running on your Arch Linux system.

sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

Those using both Fedora and OpenSUSE Linux can install Steam through software repositories included in the operating system. However, we feel that the Flatpak release of Steam performs better on these operating systems and instruct you to use that instead.

Flatpak

To get Steam working on Flatpak, you’ll need first to set up the Flatpak runtime. To set up the runtime, please follow our in-depth guide on the subject. After setting up the Flatpak runtime, use the flatpak remote-add command to add the Flathub app store to your computer. Then, use the flatpak install command to install the app.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
