Debian

Steam works on Debian. However, users must download the Steam DEB package and install it rather than setting it up through the “Main” software repository. To get the Steam DEB package, make use of the following wget download command.

wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb

After downloading the latest Steam DEB package to your computer, the installation can begin. Using the dpkg command, set up the app.

sudo dpkg -i steam.deb

Arch Linux

Arch Linux users are able to install the Steam program so long as the “multilib” software repository is enabled. To set up this repository, open up the /etc/pacman.conf file in your favorite text editor (as root).

Once the text file is open as root, find the “multilib” line and remove the # symbol. Then, remove the # symbol from the lines directly below. Finally, re-sync the official software repos and install Steam.

sudo pacman -Syy
sudo pacman -S steam

Fedora/OpenSUSE

If you want to install Steam on Fedora or OpenSUSE Linux, you will be able to with software repositories included in the operating system out of the box. However, the Flatpak release of Steam works much better, so we suggest installing that version instead.

Flatpak

To get the Flatpak version of Steam up and running, you will need first to install the Flatpak runtime on your computer. To set up the runtime, please follow our tutorial.

Once you’ve set up the Flatpak runtime on your computer, the installation of Steam can begin. Using the two commands below, set up Steam on your system.
