How to make a bucket in Minecraft
A bucket is a collection tool in Minecraft. It’s important if you want to transport water or lava. You can also use it to collect milk from cows, and to get a bucket of fish.
Bucket in Minecraft
Making a bucket is easy. It’s base ingredient is iron ingots and iron is a fairly abundant block that’s found all over the overworld in caves.
To make a bucket you need;
- Three blocks of iron ore
- One coal
- A furnace
- Crafting table
Mine three blocks of iron ore. You can mine it with any type of a pickaxe.
Mine one block of coal.
- Place all three of the iron ore blocks in the furnace and use the coal as fuel.
- Once smelting is complete, collet three iron ingots.
- Open the crafting table.
- Place the iron ingots in a V formation in the table or, place one iron ingot in the first and last cell of the first row. Place one iron ingot in the second cell of the second row.
- Collect the bucket.
Using buckets in Minecraft
Buckets are most often used to collect lava and water. To collect lava or water in a bucket, hold the bucket in your hand or select it from your inventory bar.
Move close to a source block of water or lava. Use the place action and the bucket will fill with water or lava. If it does not fill, you may be using a non-source block. Try a different block.
To use a bucket to collect milk, take the bucket in your hand and find a cow. Get close to it and use the place action. The bucket will fill with milk.
Buckets can be stacked when empty but once it’s filled, each bucket will take up one space in your inventory. It does not matter if you have multiple buckets filled with the same thing. A filled bucket will always take up one inventory block.

It’s always a good idea to keep a bucket of water with you when you go exploring. Players use the water to easily and safely climb down into deep caverns and to get back up. There are lots of clever uses of water that involve creating elevators so a bucket of water is great to have on hand. If you encounter a pool of lava in the overworld, you can use a bucket of water to get obsidian and safely cross it.
