How to Make Glass in Minecraft

Glass is most commonly made by smelting sand or red sand in a furnace with any fuel. However, glass also generates naturally in a few structures — you can find it in a secret room inside woodland mansions and throughout ancient cities. It can be dyed to make stained glass. In addition to making a beacon and glass bottles, it can also be used to make glass panes that fit in your windows.

How to Make Glass in Minecraft Step by Step

To make glass in Minecraft you need;

  • A furnace
  • Coal
  • Sand

Sand occurs naturally. Collect as much sand as you want to make glass. One block of sand will yield one block of glass. You can also use red sand to craft glass.

Coal, or any other fuel type that you want to use, will smelt the sand into glass. Once you have both the sand and the coal, place the sand in the furnace. Add the fuel. Collect glass blocks.

Make glass panes

To make glass panes;

  1. Open the crafting table.
  2. Place one glass block in each cell of the first and second row.
  3. Collect 16 glass panes.

Dye glass in Minecraft

If you want to dye a glass block one of the supported dye colors, follow these steps.

  1. Open the crafting table.
  2. Place a block of glass in all cells except for the middle cell (second cell of the second row)..
  3. Place the dye in the middle cell.
  4. Collect eight dyed glass blocks.

Note: you can replace glass blocks with glass panes and get dyed glass panes. If you use dyed glass blocks to create glass panes, the panes will be the same color as the glass.

Make tinted glass in Minecraft

Tinted glass is a unique variant that behaves differently from regular or stained glass. To craft it, open your crafting table and place 1 glass block in the center cell, then surround it with 4 amethyst shards — one above, one below, one to the left, and one to the right. This yields 2 tinted glass blocks per craft.

What makes tinted glass special is that it blocks light from passing through while still allowing you to see through it. Regular and stained glass let light pass freely, but tinted glass does not. This makes it ideal for building mob farms where you need darkness, dark rooms, or decorative skylights that give the look of glass without letting in light.

Other Ways to Obtain Glass in Minecraft

The main way to get glass is still smelting — place sand or red sand in a furnace with any fuel source and each piece of sand yields one glass block. If you’re comparing furnace types, fast furnace crafting with a blast furnace won’t work here because glass still requires a regular furnace. But smelting is not the only option. According to the official Minecraft Wiki, glass can also be found naturally generated in certain structures throughout the game world.

Some structures in the game generate with glass already in place. Woodland mansions contain a secret room that includes glass, and ancient cities also feature glass as part of their structure. If you come across either of these, you can break the glass and collect it, provided you have the right tool enchantment.

Speaking of breaking glass: placed glass only drops itself if you break it with a Silk Touch-enchanted tool. Without Silk Touch, breaking glass causes it to drop nothing at all — the block is simply destroyed. Glass has no required tool, which means you can break it with your fist or any tool in your inventory, but the Silk Touch enchantment is what determines whether you recover it. Keep this in mind before placing glass somewhere permanent.

Conclusion

Once a glass block or a glass pane has been placed, you can only collect it again if you use a tool with Silk Touch. Any other tool will cause the glass to break and drop nothing. Given that glass is easy to craft, it may not be worth using a Silk Touch tool to recover it — you can always break glass and replace it with new blocks.

Now that you know how to make glass in Minecraft, you can experiment with all its variants: clear glass, stained glass, glass panes, and tinted glass. Minecraft also has hardened glass, but it is made using compounds and doesn’t do much in standard gameplay.
