BoB Unleashed Not Working – Best Alternatives and Replacement Add-ons

While February 14th is famous for Valentine’s Day romance, for Kodi users it was a true heartbreak as the popular noobsandnerds repository disappeared. It was a sad day for many Kodi users as the repo was the home of the BoB unleashed add-on, the last descendant of a long dynasty of great add-ons. Bob Unleashed was considered by many as one of the best all-in-one add-ons. But its demise did not come as a big surprise. After all, it did happen a few times in the recent past. And with many add-ons–including BoB Unleashed–relying on questionable sources, it was bound to happen, sooner or later. The movie and TV industry is not the kind to sit and watch as their content is illegally distributed. This whole situation left many of us searching for some BoB Unleashed alternatives.

BoB Unleashed add-on

Today, we’ll introduce you to four interesting BoB Unleashed alternatives. But first, we’ll start our discussion by trying to figure what happened to the BoB Unleashed add-on and the Noobsandnerds repository. We certainly don’t have all the information, but what we’ve learned was enough to let us figure out what has probably happened. Then, we’ll discuss what can be done by Kodi users like you and me, to avoid seeing our favourite add-ons go down. As you’ll discover, the easiest way has nothing to do with changing the industry’s attitude. Finally, we present you the results of our search of the Kodi scene for alternatives to Bob Unleashed that we believe are here to stay.

For Added Privacy When Using Kodi, Use A VPN

If you want to avoid the scrutiny of overzealous Internet Service Providers or simply keep what you’re doing to yourself, you need to use a VPN. Some Internet Service providers have been known to monitor their user’s activities. They do it to ensure–or so they say–that no one is violating their terms and conditions. But when they suspect–even erroneously–that someone could be violating them, they might react by throttling down their speed, sending them infringement notices or even interrupting their service. We all want to avoid such annoying consequences, don’t we?

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, protects your privacy by encrypting all data in and out of your computer in a way that makes it virtually–no pun intended–impossible to crack using strong encryption protocols. No one intercepting your data, not even your ISP, will be able to know where you’re going or what you’re doing online. And as a bonus, by using appropriately located VPN servers, A VPN lets you circumvent most geographic restrictions.

There are many VPN providers to choose from. This makes picking the right one for your needs a daunting task. There are several factors to be considered. Here are a few of the most important. A fast connection speed will reduce and sometimes even eliminate buffering. A no-logging policy will help enhance your privacy by ensuring information about your activity can be revealed. No usage restrictions are also important as it will let you access any content at full speed. And finally, software for multiple platforms will ensure any and all of your devices are covered.

So, What Happened To The BoB Unleashed Add-on?

To be totally truthful, we don’t know exactly what happened on February 14. The web and the social networks provided us with contradictory reports as to what really took place. One thing we know for sure is that the noobsandnerds repository–where the BoB Unleashed add-on was hosted–was taken down. If you now try to access it, you now get a very eloquent error message.

Assuming that the account was in order and the hosting fees paid, the only reason why the hosting company would suspend the account is if they were forced to. An article from TorrentFreak confirmed that the hoster had indeed been contacted by the Alliance for Creativity Entertainment. Later, OpenELEQ, one of the repo’s developers announced that the team had decided to cease development rather than fight a tough legal battle. The Noobsandnerd’s twitter account was also closed in the aftermath of these events.

This even goes way beyond BoB Unleashed, though. The Noobsandnerds repo had grown to become one of the best in the past few months. And it was home to many more add-ons that all disappeared as the repository went down. This is was a sad reminder of the events that took place last summer and affected ADDONHQ, one of the best-known Kodi communities. We can only hope that some of the add-ons that were hosted on Noobsandnerds will soon find another home–and some probably will–but others will be gone for good. Unless, of course, someone forks the source code into another add-on. This too has been seen more than once.

Can More Shutdowns Be Avoided ?

This whole issue is caused by the fact that, although add-ons like BoB Unleashed contain no illegal content (technically, they don’t contain ANY content), they scrape Internet sources that do host content and present the results to users. The actual content hosting sites are generally located in places where legal action is next to impossible, giving them some form of protection. This is why they don’t mind offering unlicensed content. Given the location of the content hosters, it is much easier for the entertainment industry to go after the middlemen who facilitate accessing the content as they are often located in places where legal action is easier.

As long as this mode of operation goes on, the industry will keep going after developers, hosters and repositories and add-ons will keep disappearing. The only way a developer can protect himself from that is by releasing add-ons that only propose licensed or public domain content. Similarly, Kodi users can protect themselves from disappearing add-ons by only using add-ons with only legal content.

Are There Any BoB Unleashed Alternatives?

The BoB Unleashed add-on, although it was quite unique with its numerous listers’ subsection, was still nothing more than an all-in-one add-on. That is to say, an add-on that offered a variety of content that included movies, TV shows, kids content, sports, etc.

While there are lots of alternatives that offer a similar variety of content to what was available in BoB Unleashed, we’d have a hard time recommending them. They might be here today, as this is written, but they could be gone by the time you read it. Instead, we’d rather look for potentially interesting alternatives that are solely offering fully licensed and legal content. That way, the risks of seeing them disappear due to some DMCA takedown are eliminated.

Of course, you cant expect to find the latest blockbusters–those that are still in theaters–or the current season of your favourite TV show but that doesn’t mean you can’t find great entertainment value. And best of all, you have a reasonable assurance that they add-on will still work next week when you decide to catch up on that movie you saw last week while browsing the add-on’s selection.

Four BoB Unleashed Alternatives Worth Trying

Since many of us are mostly using add-ons for watching movies and TV shows, we’ve searched the Kodi scene for add-ons that propose movies and/or TV shows, that are free to use and that only have legal content. All the add-ons we’re about to present to you meet these criteria. In fact, it actually was easier than we thought it would be as there are quite a few of them. We’ve left out add-ons that required a paid subscription but, if you’re willing to shell out some money, you’ll find even more options and more content. Just think of Netflix, for example.

Tubi TV

Tubi TV is an internet-based streaming service that’s available on a website but also as an app on smart TVs and media players. It is known to offer one of the largest content libraries of any online platform, second only to Netflix’s. The service proposes over 50,000 movies and TV episodes. This includes 600 titles rated “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. But unlike Netflix–and this is where it gets even more interesting–Tubi TV is free to use. The service is only available in Canada, the US and the UK. Furthermore, not all content is available in every country. Using a VPN can be handy as it will let you bypass the country restrictions and access any content you want from anywhere.

Unlike many other free streaming services with obscure indie titles, Tubi TV features a good selection of well-known content. Content is neatly organized into categories, making it easy to find something to watch.

Installing And Using The Tubi TV Add-on
  1. You can get the add-on’s .zip file directly from GitHub.
  2. From that page, download the file plugin.video.tubi-X.X.X.zip.
  3. From the Kodi home screen, Click Add-ons from the left-side menu.
  4. Then, click the Add-on browser icon. Its the one that looks like an open box in the upper-left corner.
  5. Click install from zip file.
  6. Navigate to the location where you saved the zip file and click it to launch the add-on’s installation.

Once installed, using the add-on is quite intuitive. Although you might find its thirty-plus items main menu intimidating, don’t let that fool you, The add-on is actually quite well-organized and you shouldn’t have much trouble finding content to your liking.

Crackle

Like the previous example, Crackle is another well-known streaming service. There’s one major difference, though. It’s owned by Sony. And with Sony and its subsidiaries–such as Columbia and Tristar–producing tons of movies, you can expect a good selection. And there is! But Sony also has the funds required to secure other non-Sony titles. And While the online service uses ads to generate revenue, ads are inherently blocked on Kodi so they aren’t present in the Kodi add-on. You’ll be able to watch for hours with no interruption.

Crackle might not have as many titles as some other services–certainly not as many as Tubi TV–but the ones it does have are often better-known. For instance, there’s Heroes, House of Flying Daggers, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The main drawback is that Crackle’s content tends to be a few years old.

Installing And Using The Crackle Add-on
  1. Go to this URL to find the eracknaphobia repository zip file.
  2. Locate and download the repository.eracknaphobia.zip file to your device.
  3. From the Kodi home screen, Click Add-ons from the left-side menu.
  4. Then, click the Add-on browser icon. Its the one that looks like an open box in the upper-left corner.
  5. Click install from zip file.
  6. Navigate to the location where you saved the zip file and click it to launch the eracknophobia repo’s installation.
  7. Once you get a confirmation of the repository’s installation on the top right corner of the screen, click Install from repository.
  8. Click the eracknaphobia’s Repo repository, then click Video add-ons and finally, click Crackle.
  9. From the Crackle add-on installation page, click the Install button at the bottom right to launch the add-on installation.
  10. After a few seconds, a message at the top right of the screen confirms the successful installation of the add-on.

Once installed, navigating the add-on is a piece of cake. You choose between movies and TV shows an then you select a title of your choice. Another drawback is that you won’t usually find complete series or even complete seasons of TV shows. Instead, Crackle seems to only offer a selection of seemingly random episodes from various seasons.

SnagFilms

If you’re into indie films, the SnagFilms add-on has a big collection of over 5000 free-to-watch independent films. And to make it even more interesting, most of the add-on’s content is available in high-definition. The films are grouped by genre with categories that are somewhat more “in-depth” than what one usually finds in typical add-ons of this type. This makes locating specific content easier, a big advantage in an add-on which lacks a search engine.

The add-on has no configurable options and it is very simple to use. You simply install it and start watching. This being a free service that doesn’t get advertising income, don’t go expecting much more than basic functionality. But despite that, you might very well discover some great content in here.

Installing The Snag Films Add-on
  1. The Snagfilms addon is available from the official Kodi addon repository. This makes its installation even simpler.
  2. From the Kodi home screen, Click Add-ons from the left-side menu.
  3. Then, click the Add-on browser icon. Its the one that looks like an open box in the upper-left corner.
  4. Click Install from repository.
  5. Click the Kodi Add-on Repository, then click Video add-ons and scroll down until you get to the Snagfilms add-on and click it.
  6. From the Snagfilms add-on installation page, click the Install button at the bottom right to launch the add-on installation.
  7. After a few seconds, a message at the top right of the screen confirms the successful installation of the add-on.

Big Star Movies

Big Star Movies is yet another internet-based streaming service, much like Crackle or Tubi TV. Although the Big Star website allows you to rent premium movies for a fee, this feature is not available in the Kodi add-on. With Kodi not being a particularly secure platform and probably not one where you’d want to enter payment information, this won’t be much of a concern as there is still some great free content on the platform.

When it comes to movies, though, Big Star’s selection is subpar and the movies that are available aren’t particularly well known. However, despite its name, the addon is an excellent place to watch TV shows. It’s got classics like Peep Show, Lip Service, or Queer as Folk. It also has several “special interest” shows. And the add-on has a search function that can help you find something specific, something we don’t often see in these types of add-ons.

Installing The Big Star Movie Add-on
  1. Go to this URL to find the MetalChris’ repository zip file.
  2. Click the Download zip button and save the .zip file to your device.
  3. From the Kodi home screen, Click Add-ons from the left-side menu.
  4. Then, click the Add-on browser icon. Its the one that looks like an open box in the upper-left corner.
  5. Click install from zip file.
  6. Navigate to the location where you saved the zip file and click it to launch the MetalChris’ repository’s installation.
  7. Once you get a confirmation of the repository’s installation on the top right corner of the screen, click Install from repository.
  8. Click the MetalChris’ Repository, then click Video add-ons and finally, click BigStar Movies & TV.
  9. From the Big Star Movies add-on installation page, click the Install button at the bottom right to launch the add-on installation.
  10. After a few seconds, a message at the top right of the screen confirms the successful installation of the add-on.

Wrap Up

To be totally honest, BoB Unleashed was one of our favourite add-ons and we were really sad to see it disappear. But unfortunately, the is the fate of all add-ons relying on sources that are not 100% legit. The only way one can protect himself against add-ons disappearing is but not using these types of add-ons and stick to add-ons with legally licensed content. The price one has to pay for durable add-ons is content that might not be as rich.

We’ve introduced you to four add-ons that together offer lots of excellent content. They include both independent and lesser-known films and blockbuster hits from a few years ago. A few of them also have a pretty decent selection of TV shows, albeit not the most recent ones. Between the four add-ons we propose, you’re almost certain to find something you like.

What are you using as a BoB Unleashed alternative? And what do you think of these add-ons that only carry legal content? Are they worth installing or they’re just garbage? Use the comments below to share your thoughts on the subject with us.
