Elysium Not Working — Best Elysium Add-ons Alternatives

The Kodi scene is a dynamic place; add-ons come and go at an astounding pace. And with many of them relying on content sources of questionable legality, they are often forced to be taken down. The Elysium add-on, once very popular and with lots of great content is one of those. It stopped working in mid-February when its home, the noobsandnerds repository was taken down. Today, we’ll try to identify some interesting Elysium alternatives while exploring what can be done to avoid seeing our favourite add-ons go down.

Elysium Kodi Add-on

We’ll start our discussion by exploring what happened to the Elysium add-on and the Noobsandnerds repository. While we don’t have much detailed information, we’ve been able to figure what probably has happened. Then, we’ll talk about what can be done, from a Kodi user standpoint, to avoid such situations. And finally, we’ve searched the Kodi scene for alternatives to Elysium that are here to stay. We’ll introduce you to the best four we’ve found.

For Added Privacy When Using Kodi, Use A VPN

If you want to keep what you’re doing to yourself and avoid the scrutiny of an overzealous Internet Service Provider, you need to use a VPN. Internet Service providers have been known to monitor their user’s activities. And when they suspect–even erroneously–that someone might be violating their terms and conditions, they can react by throttling down their speed, sending them infringement notices or even interrupting their service.

A VPN protects your privacy by encrypting all data in and out of your computer in a way that makes it almost impossible to crack using strong encryption protocols. No one, not even your ISP, will be able to know where you’re going or what you’re doing online. And as a bonus, using appropriately located servers, A VPN lets you circumvent most geographic restrictions.

There are many VPN providers to choose from. Picking the right one can be a daunting task. There are numerous factors to be considered. Among the most important a fast connection speed will reduce and sometimes eliminate buffering, a no-logging policy will help enhance your privacy, no usage restrictions will let you access any content at full speed and software for multiple platforms will ensure any of your devices are covered.

The Best VPN For Kodi Users – IPVanish

Incursion Add-on - IPVanish

After spending much time testing the various VPN providers, our top recommendation for Kodi users is undoubtedly IPVanish. They offer a thorough privacy solution. With servers worldwide, no speed cap or throttling, unlimited bandwidth, unrestricted traffic, a strict no-logging policy and client software available for many platforms, IPVanish delivers impressive performance and value.

READER DEAL: IPVanish offers a 7-day money back guarantee which means you have a week to test it risk-free. Please note that Addictive Tips readers can save a massive 60% here on the IPVanish annual plan, taking the monthly price down to only $4.87/mo.

What Happened To The Elysium Add-on?

It is hard to tell exactly what happened on February 14. There are conflicting reports on the web as to what actually took place. Here’s what we know for sure. The noobsandnerds repository–where the Elysium add-on was hosted–went down on that day. If you try to access it, you now get an error message.

Noobsandnerds Website Error

We can only assume that the account was in order and the hosting fees paid, yet the site was taken down by the hosting company. An article from TorrentFreak confirmed that the hoster had been contacted by the Alliance for Creativity Entertainment and OpenELEQ, one of the repo’s most prominent developers announced that the team had decided to cease development rather than fight a tough legal battle. Noobsandnerd’s twitter account was also closed in the aftermath of these events.

This is way bigger than Elysium, though. The Noobsandnerds repo was home to many more add-ons that all disappeared as the repository went down. This is not unlike the events that took place last summer and affected ADDONHQ, one of the best-known Kodi communities. Chances are that some of the add-ons that were hosted on noobsandnerds will soon find another home but others, like Elysium, are gone for good. That is, of course, until someone forks the source code into another add-on.

What Can Be Done To Avoid This?

All this imbroglio stems from the fact that, although add-ons contain no illegal content (and their developers don’t host any either),  add-ons scrape Internet sources that do host content and present the results to users, allowing them to watch essentially unlicensed content. The actual sites hosting the unlicensed content are generally located in places where legal action is next to impossible. It is, therefore, much easier for the entertainment industry to go after the middlemen who facilitate accessing the content.

As long as this model of operation will stay, the industry will go after developers and repositories and add-ons will disappear. The only way a developer can protect himself from that is by only developing add-ons that propose licensed or public domain content. Likewise, Kodi users can also protect themselves from disappearing add-ons by only using add-ons with nothing but legal content.

Are There Any Elysium Alternatives?

While there might be some alternatives that will propose similar content to what was once available in the Elysium add-on, it is hard for us to recommend any of them. Although they are here today, as this is written, they might be gone by the time you read it. Instead, we’ve decided to look for potentially interesting alternatives that are only offering fully licensed and legal content. Of course, you won’t find the latest blockbusters that are still in theaters of the current season of your favourite TV show but that doesn’t mean you won’t find great entertainment value.

Four Elysium Alternatives You Might Want To Try

So, we’ve searched the Kodi scene for add-ons that propose movies and/or TV shows, that are free to use and that only have legal content. It was, in fact somewhat easier than we originally thought it would be. There are actually quite a few of them. And as a side note, there are even more if you’re willing to pay for a monthly subscription. Just think of Netflix, for example.

Tubi TV

Tubi TV is a well-known streaming service that’s available on many smart TVs and media players. It boasts one of the largest content libraries of any online platform, second only to Netflix’s. With over 50,000 movies and TV episodes, including 600 titles rated “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, you’ll have plenty of choices. And unlike Netflix, Tubi TV is completely free to use. It is available in Canada, the US and the UK, although not all content is available in every country. Of course, using a VPN will let you bypass the country restrictions and access any content you want from anywhere in the world.

Contrary to most other free streaming services, Tubi TV features a good selection of well-known titles including The Inbetweeners, Hard Candy, and Death Note. And content is neatly organized into categories, making it easy to find something to watch.

Installing And Using The Tubi TV Add-on

  1. You can get the .zip file directly from GitHub.
  2. From that page, download the file plugin.video.tubi-X.X.X.zip.
  3. From the Kodi home screen, Click Add-ons from the left-side menu.
  4. Then, click the Add-on browser icon. Its the one that looks like an open box in the upper-left corner.
  5. Click install from zip file.
  6. Navigate to the location where you saved the zip file and click it to launch the add-on’s installation.

Once installed, using the add-on is very intuitive. You might find its thirty-something-item main menu intimidating but don’t let that fool you, The add-on is actually quite well-organized and you shouldn’t have much trouble finding content to your liking.

Crackle

Crackle is another streaming service like Tubi TV but with one major difference: it’s owned by Sony. And with Sony and its subsidiaries producing tons of movies, you can expect a good selection. Sony also has the funds required to secure other non-Sony titles. While the online service uses ads to generate revenue, ads are inherently blocked on Kodi so they aren’t present in the Kodi add-on. You’ll be able to for hours-on without interruption.

Crackle might not have as many titles as some other services, but the ones it does have are other better-known. For instance, there’s Heroes, House of Flying Daggers, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. As expected, most of Crackle’s content is a few years old.

  9. From the Crackle add-on installation page, click the Install button at the bottom right to launch the add-on installation.
  10. After a few seconds, a message at the top right of the screen confirms the successful installation of the add-on.

Once installed, navigating the add-on is easy. You first choose between movies and TV shows an then you select a title of your choice. For TV shows, you could be disappointed to find out that they don’t usually have full series but rather a selection of seemingly random episodes from various seasons.

SnagFilms

The SnagFilms add-on has a collection of over 5000 free-to-watch independent films. Furthermore, most of the add-on’s content is available in high-definition. The contents are grouped by genre with categories that are more in-depth than you’d usually find in typical add-ons. This makes locating specific content easier which is great considering the add-on lacks a search function.

With no configurable options, the add-on is very simple to use. Just install it and start watching. Of course, with such a free service that can’t generate income via ads on Kodi, you can’t really expect much more than basic functionality. Don’t let that stop you, though, as you might discover some great content in here.

Big Star Movies – 2000

Big Star Movies is another streaming service, much like Tubi TV. Although the Big Star website allows you to rent premium movies for a fee, this feature is not available in the Kodi add-on. It’s a good thing as Kodi is not a particularly secure platform and certainly not one where you’d want to enter payment information.

When it comes to movies, Big Star’s movies selection is not one of the best and the ones that are there aren’t particularly well known. However, despite its name, this addon is an excellent place to watch TV shows. It’s got classics like Peep Show, Lip Service, or Queer as Folk, plus several special interest shows. And one thing we don’t find often in these types of add-ons, there’s a search function that can help you find something specific.

In Conclusion

Although it is sad that the Elysium add-on disappeared, it was to be expected. We’ve seen so many add-ons go in the past year that it no longer surprises anyone. And the only way to protect ourselves from disappearing add-ons is to only use add-ons that propose legal and licensed content. These are here to stay even if their content selection is often not as good as we’d want.

But still. we’ve introduced you to four add-ons that combine to offer tons of great content including both independent and lesser-known films and blockbuster hits from a few years ago. Between the four, you’re almost certain to find something you like.

What is your favourite Elysium alternative? And what do you think of add-ons with only legal content? Do you think they are worth installing or they’re just garbage? Use the comments below to share your thoughts with us.
