Import Google GMail & Microsoft Hotmail Contacts In Outlook 2010
If organizing contact list in multiple accounts have baffled you then its better to import all the contacts into Outlook 2010 as it provides an easy way to manage contact list. Through Outlook import wizard, you can instantly import GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc contacts into Outlook Contact folder and organize them under one window. In this post we will show how to import GMail and Hotmail contacts list, the procedure is same for all other online email services.
Exporting GMail Contacts
Open Gmail account, from left sidebar, click Contacts.
In main Contacts window, click Export
Under export window, enable Everyone (All Contacts) checkbox and from Which Export format, enable Outlook CSV format option. Click Export to save the contacts list on local drive.
Exporting Hotmail Contacts
Open Hotmail mail window, from left side bar, click Contact list.
Contacts main window will appear. In contact list, enable check box adjacent to Name title to select complete contact list and from Manage drop-down list, select Export.
Enter captcha and click Export to save this file on local drive.
Importing Contacts In Outlook
Launch Outlook 2010, in File menu, click Open, and finally click Import.
It will bring up Import and Export Wizard. Select Import from another program or file from the list and click Next.
In this step, select Comma Separated Values (DOS) and hit Next.
Now click Browse button to select the Gmail contacts CSV file and click OK in Browse window.
For preventing duplicate contacts, enable Do not import duplicate items option and click Next to proceed further.
Select the Contacts folder from the Destination folder list and click Next.
In the last step of wizard, you can Map contact list by clicking Map Custom Fields. Click Finish to end the wizard.
Outlook will successfully import Gmail contacts in Contact list. For importing Hotmail contact list follow the same import procedure.
When done, from left sidebar click Contacts.
It will open Contact main window, now verify the imported contact list and add additional contacts details as desired.
If you need to sync Google GMail contacts with Outlook 2010, Go Contact Sync will help.
Great help!
Just used these instructions for moving gmail contacts into Outlook 2013 and they worked great. There were a couple little changes in the dialog boxes but in general the steps are the same. Thanks!
When mapping, I have first name, Last name, but only option is Name?
Wow! You made this SO easy! Terrific explaination, and easy to follow!
Thanks 🙂
Can I import my contacts if I have Outlook 2003?
How do I get Outlook 2010
Is Outlook 2010 a free download?
Hi, can you please help me?
I get a bunch of empty contacts, i did this three times and even tried to do this using Vcards, if there is a solution, I will thank you a lot.
Thanks you in advance

Hi, I had the same issue. In my case the problem was in .csv file syntax. Hotmail is using semicolon as separator whereas Outlook would like to have comma as separator. I used freeware editor to transform Hotmail exported .csv file into true comma separated (not semicolon separated). After that Outlook import worked just fine and the data fields mapped correctly.
Btw, The phone numbers in my original .csv were messed up. Numbers were presented in engineering format (like 555E10) when opening the file in MS Excel). I changed the cell format in Excel to “number” prior to fixing the separator character issue. Hope this helps.
Hi Yannis, thanks for the advice,I will try doing that but I’m using Gmail and not Hotmail.
If you can help me in the same issue with Gmail, I will be very thankful.
Thank you in advance

Hi, sorry I’m not familiar with how Gmail exports contacts. However based on your description it sounds you may have an issue with .csv format. How does the field mapping dialog box seem in Outlook when you import the .csv file? I attached screenshot of my bad format .csv import. The highlighted row shows the problem i.e. semicolon character is not recognized as field separator by Outlook. Maybe there is similar issue with Gmail csv file format..?j
