New to the Android Market, DXHome might look like a run-of-the-mill home screen replacement app at first glance but it packs quite a few handy features and perks that might get you interested. The launcher comes packed with its very own theme store, clock & weather widget, ten slick home screen transitions and a zippy, efficient home screen editing interface, all of which remind one of MIUI’s native launcher. The default theme that comes with the launcher doesn’t really look like much, but users can fix that easily according to their tastes courtesy of the launcher’s online theme store. What users can’t fix is the launcher’s drop in performance while within the app drawer. But we’ll leave that to the developers and future updates. For now, let’s explore what else DXHome has in store for us.
One of the few things that DXHome does not have in common with the MIUI stock launcher or any other popular launcher, for that matter, is its dockbar. The dock remains visible even within the app drawer and acts as a task bar within the editing interface. The current version of the launcher does not offer any app drawer customization. However, it does allow you to uninstall apps directly from within the drawer.
Holding down on an icon, widget or empty space on the home screen (or selecting Menu > Eidt) brings up the editing interface. The dockbar automatically slides to the left to reveal editing and customization options. Slide once to the right to remove icons from the dock or add new ones (up to a maximum of five). Slide to the right once more to add, delete and rearrange home screens. Folders can also be created by simply dropping one app shortcut over the other.
And that’s not the only customization you get to do. DXHome is one of the few home screen replacement apps that are theme-able. Like with the stock MIUI launcher and a few other popular launchers such as LauncherPro and ADW Launcher, you can theme selective elements (icons, icon border and/or wallpaper) of the launcher wile leaving the rest intact. You can download additional themes from the launcher’s online theme store within Menu > Theme > Change Theme > DXHome Theme > Online Themes.
Not bad, huh? Well, we’re not done yet. The app packs a comprehensive collection of home screen transition effects (Menu > Preferences >, most of which seem to have been borrowed from older more popular launchers but mostly from MIUI’s native launcher. Still, the is still quite a few features and a speed boost short of threatening the likes of GO Launcher EX, LauncherPro & ADW Launcher. It would be nice to see the addition of a few customization features for the app drawer, the option to alter the speed of home screen transitions and rename folder widgets.
