FastStatus: Use Activator Gestures To Quickly Compose SMS, Tweets Or Mail [Cydia]

Although many Cydia tweaks, and even apps in the iOS App Store, have started employing gesture control, one can’t help but feel that there is much more that can be done with the concept. There are quite a few tweaks that make the process of composing and sending tweets faster and more efficient. Similar apps exist for SMS and email too. Won’t it be nice if there were a way to avail all these options from one menu accessible through a simple gesture? Well, that’s exactly what FastStatus does. It lets you launch a menu containing options to compose Twitter updates, SMS and email through an Activator gesture. Some might argue that the functionality offered by FastStatus is not worthy of a standalone, separate Cydia tweak, but when you think about it, this tweak has the potential of becoming one of your most frequently used iPhone tweak.

Once installed, FastStatus will appear in the Settings app. From within the Activation Method menu in the tweak’s settings, you can choose the Activator gesture used to make the FastStatus menu appear. Once you’ve specified a gesture, you will be able to use the tweak from anywhere in the OS.

As mentioned earlier, the FastStatus menu contains options for Mail, SMS and Twitter, in that order, and a Cancel button to dismiss it. The Twitter button doesn’t launch the iOS 5 tweet composition window; it simply launches the official Twitter app, that is, if it is installed on your iDevice. If it is not, you will be taken to the Twitter login page in mobile Safari. This is a little inconvenient, but take nothing away from the SMS and Mail options of FastStatus. Ordinarily, you will have to launch the stock Messages app, wait a few moments for all the threads to load completely (something that is bound to happen if you have thousands of text messages stored in your iPhone), and then hit the compose button located in the top right corner of the app. Similarly, for Mail, the composition of a new messages requires going to the appropriate inbox and hitting the new mail button. With FastStatus, you will have to do nothing more than performing your chosen gesture, and hitting the right button from the tweak’s menu.

FastStatus is pretty handy, and serves its purpose without being too obstructive. It is available for free in the ModMyi repo of the Cydia store.
