How To: Install Game Center On iPhone 3G/3GS And iPod Touch iOS 4

The Game Center app was introduced in iOS 4 GM edition, but was excluded from the final and public release of iOS 4 for iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch units shipped with iOS 4. If you have switched from iOS 4 GM to iOS 4 and miss Game Center after the update, fret not! While Apple may want to deprive you of it, we are here to help. Yes, you can still get the Game Center app on your iPhone or iPod Touch, but there is a catch – your device must be jailbroken. Wanna learn more? Read on.

For those of you who don’t know it, Game Center is Apple’s social gaming network for online multiplayer gaming as well as public profiles of your game achievements for all to see. Think of it as something similar to Microsoft’s XBox LIVE and Sony’s PSN for PlayStation, as well as OpenFeint, Plus+, ScoreLoop and other similar apps that popped up on the iTunes App Store due to the lack of such a service from Apple in previous versions of iOS.

With gaming having become a major part of the iOS ecosystem with tens of thousands of casual as well as console-quality games being available on the iTunes App Store, it was about time Apple introduced such a feature for adding a socially interactive aspect to gaming on iOS, as well as providing a native platform for multiplayer gaming that integrates tightly into the iOS ecosystem.

So you have a jailbroken iPhone 3G/3GS  or iPod Touch with iOS 4? Here is the step by step guide on how to install Game Center app on your device.

  1. The first step is launch Cydia.
  2. Now navigate to the “manage” tab and press “source”.
  3. Once in “source”, tap on “add” and type the following URL repo: http://repo.woowiz.net
  4. Now go to Cydia Search bar and search for “GameCenter”.
  5. Finally, press “install” on the top corner of the display and confirm the installation.

There you go! now you have Game Center as you had it before in iOS 4 GM. Enjoy!
