You don’t need to open Photoshop each time you want to create an icon or update one of your existing ones with a personal touch of your own. Icon editing tools have been around on Windows for fairly long now, and here at AddictiveTips, we’ve been covering quite a handful of them from time to time, some offering rich interfaces while other carrying a ton of features. The tool we have at your disposal today is called Junior Icon Editor, and it’s pretty fun to use, allowing you to instantly create icons, either from existing images or from scratch.
The tool carries several handy features to help you out, and supports creating and editing icons for multiple platforms, including Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, and WP7. You can import images and build new icons out of them, exporting the output to ICO, PNG, XPM, XBM and ICPR formats.
When you choose to create a new icon from scratch, Junior lets you specify a few core parameters about the icon file you’re going to build. You can specify the icon’s size either from several presets or by entering custom dimensions, the conversion mode (Cut, Dither, Gray Scale), and color mode (1 bit to 32 bits).
When it comes to the UI, the application makes you feel at home if you’ve ever used a photo or icon editor in the past, while remaining easy to use even for those who have never used such an app before. It carries all the tools you’ll need to create and modify icons, such as shapes, brush, paint, text, line, color picker etc. in the left pane. The right side is dedicated to a preview of all icon sizes in case the file contains icons in multiple dimensions. You can also control zooming of the preview area via the pertaining buttons at the top. The redo and undo buttons aid in easily reverting back any accidental modifications.
The best way to take full advantage of the editing area is by zooming in before you start tweak an icon. This simply gives you better control regarding every little detail that you may want to edit. The large color palette on the right provides quick access to the colors you want use.
Overall, Junior Icon Editor is a great application designed for those who want to quickly create new icons with ease. The tool is available for free and works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 / 8.1.
