How to reset Apple AirPods

Apple AirPods are wireless Bluetooth headphones. They’re now on their second iteration i.e., 2nd generation version. They’ve been fairly successful and while some users have definitely lost one pod from a pair, they continue to be one of the best wireless headphones on the market.

Apple Airpods are paired like any other Bluetooth device. Unlike other Bluetooth devices though, AirPods will seamlessly connect between all you Apple devices when you switch over to them. You don’t have to unpair AirPods from one device and pair them with another before you can use them.

Reset Apple AirPods

Apple’s AirPods can run into trouble when connecting to a device they’ve been paired to. One of the easiest ways to fix this problem is to reset the AirPods, and pair and connect them again. In order to reset AirPods, you need to have their charging case on hand.

  1. Place both AirPods in their case.
  2. Close the lid and keep it closed for 30 seconds (make it a minute if you want to be extra sure).
  3. Open the lid.
  4. On your iPhone, open the Settings app and go to Bluetooth.
  5. Next to your AirPods, tap the i button.
  6. Select the Forget this device option.
  7. Confirm you want to forget the device.
  8. On the AirPods case, press and hold the set up button until the light on the case flashes white (normally happens in 15 seconds).
  9. The AirPods will be reset and you can pair them with your iPhone again.

Trouble connecting AirPods

AirPods normally work well with Apple devices, and connect easily enough with non-Apple devices. Here are a few things you can try if you regularly have trouble connecting AirPods after they have been paired to your iPhone.

  • Restart the iPhone.
  • If there is a pending iOS update, install it.
  • Make sure the AirPods are fully charged or charge them to 100%
  • Try disconnecting other Bluetooth devices that are connected or paired to your iPhone.

Conclusion

AirPods can work with Apple and non-Apple devices but you will get the most out of them when you use them within Apple’s echo system of devices and operating systems. The disconnection problems are often caused by too many Bluetooth devices connected to the same device or multiple Bluetooth devices working nearby. If you have more than one pair of Bluetooth headsets connected or paired to your system, remove the other pair and leave only the AirPods. AirPods, regardless of the generation, are all reset the same way.
