There are a host of text editors out there for Windows. Simpler text editing tasks can be performing using the default Windows Notepad, while for the complex ones, you can use Notepad++, an open-source text editor massively reviewed (and favored) on AddictiveTips. Previously, we covered a text editor for Windows, called Intype, which lets you perform advanced tasks using a host of sample code modules of several programming languages, including HTML, CSS, C, C++. Java, Perl, PHP, Python, SQL and a lot more. Today, we have another text editor called PilotEdit Lite, which doesn’t provide options to work with as many programming languages as Intype, but has a more focused approach. It works as a Text Editor, HTML editor, PHP editor, Java editor and Hex editor. The software can handle massive files – even those larger than 50 GB – and offers customizable syntax and keyword highlighting. More on the application past the break.
Other than the capability to handle large files, it also allows users to perform advanced search and replace operations to replace text in single or multiple files at a time. Moreover, a built-in FTP client allows you to open, edit, upload and download large files directly to/from an FTP server.
The main interface has File, Edit, Search, View, Compare, Configure and Window menus at the top, the File Tree Window appears in the left pane, while files which are currently open appear in the right pane. Each file is launched in a separate tab, so you can work with multiple files at a time without having to close the previous one.
Other than text editing, the application contains some other useful tools, such as the Compare Directories utility. It enables you to compare two folders at a time and check for identical files. If any similar files are found, you can Merge them together into a single file, which helps you avoid the problem of duplication. The Export results button lets you save the comparison report in HTML format.
The Search menu at the top offers multiple searching modes, including Find, Find Previous, Find Next, Replace, Find in Multiple Directories and Files, and Replace in Multiple Directories and Files. The ability to replace text in in multiple directories and files at a time saves a lot of time usually wasted in searching and updated a text snippet in every required file, and even more so when debugging a certain piece of code.
PilotEdit Lite works on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8
