Narwhal for reddit Is Perfect For Lurkers & GIF Haters [iOS]

I have a Reddit account that I rarely, if ever, sign in to but I browse Reddit long into the wee hours of the night but I rarely browse the site on my phone because there isn’t an app for it that I like. It is safe to say that I’m a lurker, like many people. Narwhal for reddit for iOS is, as the name clearly implies, an app for Redditing. If you want a free app for browsing as a lurker, Narwhal is great and if you aren’t a lurker but like the app anyway, you can upgrade to unlock the sign in, up/down vote, comment, and submit content features. The app boasts an interface designed specifically for iOS 7. You can scroll through the front page and more links will load as you scroll further down. Tap a link to view it and read comments. Swiping from left to right opens a navigation panel that you can use to jump to the popular sub-reddits. You can also enter the name of any sub-reddit or user in the navigation panel to open it in the app.

Install the app and you’re ready to start Redditing. You can se how many comments and karma a post has received, how long ago it was submitted, which sub-reddit it was submitted to, and the user who submitted it. Tap a post and it will open in a new screen with a preview and comments below it. Links that you’ve visited appear faded out while the ones you haven’t seen are still in a dark grey.

Swipe left-to-right to open the navigation pane. Scroll through the list of sub-reddits and tap the one you want to switch to. You can use the search bar at the top to search Reddit or use the Explore options to view a particular sub-reddit or to view a particular user’s Reddit activity.

The preferences allow you to block NSFW content; you can filter it out completely from the links you see, or you can disable thumbnails for NSFW posts.

The one major drawback of this app is that it does not play GIFs and we know how much everyone loves GIFs (there’s an entire sub-reddit for it). For those who don’t have the patience to wait for a GIF to load, this isn’t going to be a huge problem but the lack of support for GIFs is a huge shortcoming. If you want to sign in with you Reddit account, you will have to upgrade for $1.99.
