How to fix the AT&T U-verse gateway authentication failure

Your internet connection comes to you via an ISP. The ISP normally remains in the background; all you know is that your devices are able to connect to the router and all is good. If you experience problems connecting to a particular website, the problems often lies with your internet settings or the router configuration. It’s normally easy to resolve.

AT&T is one of the largest ISPs in America. It provides both fast internet and high speed cable connections, in addition to other services and products. You can normally rely on uninterrupted service from the company. This holds true for both the internet and its cable service.

Of the many services and products that AT&T offers, the U-Verse TV service. It’s TV delivered over a high-speed network connection and like any other network connection, it can run into problems. If you’re seeing the gateway authentication failure message on your U-Verse TV set, try the fixes below.

1. Check AT&T service status

Before trying anything to fix the gateway authentication failure error, check if it’s on your end or if AT&T is experiencing a service outage. It does happen and the company needs to fix it.

To check the service status, visit the company’s service status page. Alternatively, you can all the support line and they will tell you if there is an on-going problem.

If there is a service outage, it is upto AT&T to resolve it.

2. Power cycle modem

Try restarting the modem i.e., your router.

  1. Locate the power button on the router.
  2. Press and hold the button for 15 seconds.
  3. Release the button.
  4. Unplug the modem from the wall socket.
  5. Wait another 15 seconds.
  6. Connect the power plug to the modem.
  7. Press the power button to turn it on.
  8. Wait for the lights to stabilize.

3. Check for loose cable

If a cable isn’t connected securely to the router, you may see the gateway authentication failure error. Locate the router and make sure everything is connected securely. Try to disconnect and reconnect it again. Additionally, make sure everything is connected to the correct port/socket.

4. Reset the router

Try resetting the router. The gateway authentication failure error points to a problem with network configurations and if you’re getting on your TV, as well as other devices, your network settings in the router need to be reset.

  1. Locate the reset button on the router (this is different from the power button).
  2. Press and hold the reset button.
  3. When the lights on the router start blinking, release the button.
  4. Wait for the lights to stabilize.
  5. The gateway authentication failure should be gone.

 The gateway authentication failure error on a computer may have to do with all sorts of things; the browser, the computer’s network settings, your DNS settings, or the website you’re trying to access.
