Windows isn’t known for its breathtaking desktop wallpapers but they aren’t bad either, just not comparable to those found on macOS. At one point, the Windows XP desktop image was one of the most popular images in the world. If you’re in love with any of the Windows 10 wallpapers and want to use them elsewhere, in addition to your desktop, you might want to know where they’re saved on your system. The images, in all their HD glory are inside your Windows root folder.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the following location.
The three folders here will contain all the default Windows 10 wallpapers, including the Windows Hero wallpaper. The 4K folder contains the Windows Hero image in lots of different screen sizes as well as for monitors that you use in the portrait orientation. They’re all high resolution images.
The Wallpaper folder will have collections of wallpapers that have been installed on your system. These collections are the default wallpapers and any other wallpapers that your laptop manufacturer might have included. This is where HP and Dell wallpapers can be found.
The Screen folder is where the default lock screen images are stored. If you like one of these images and would like to use them on your desktop, simply copy them to a different folder that you can select images from in the Settings app.
If you’ve got a wallpaper already set on your desktop but you can’t locate the folder it’s saved in, or the image has been deleted by accident, you might be wondering where you can find a cached copy of the same image on your hard drive. Try giving this same location a try or use a third-party app like John’s Background Switcher to find it.
