How To Refresh Bookmark Favicons In Edge On Windows 10

Microsoft Edge isn’t like other browsers. It’s a UWP app that deals with common items like bookmarks very differently than other, normal desktop browsers do. As a result, users are unable to interact with its data and files the way they can with Chrome and Firefox. Edge, on occasion, doesn’t load or show the correct favicon for a bookmark. Here’s how you can refresh bookmark favicons in Edge.

Bookmark Favicons In Edge

In order to fix bookmark favicons in Edge, you need to download and install an app called Manage Edge Favorites. This app gives you control over the Favorites in Edge that the browser itself doesn’t allow. Once you’ve installed the app, open it and select all the favorites/bookmarks that have incorrect or missing favicons.

Once you’ve selected them all, go to Edit>Refresh Icon.

If you need to refresh/fetch the favicon for a single favorite/bookmark, select only that one in the app, right-click it, and select Refresh Icon from the context menu.

Unfortunately, because this is Edge, the favicon may not refresh which means you will need to manually set it. The app allows you to do that as well though, understandably, it will take far more time to do it since you have to download the favicon, and then set it for each favorite/bookmark.

To manually set the favicon for a favorite/bookmark in Edge, download it first. It ought to be a small, PNG file. Open Manage Edge Favorites, and right-click the favorite/bookmark that you want to set the favicon for. From the context menu, select the ‘Set Icon’ option and then browse for and select the image you want  to use. Once selected, go to File>Save Changes.

You will find that this app does quite a few things and if you use Edge, you will likely use this app to make your favorites/bookmarks more manageable. This is why we should caution you on which changes you make first, and which ones you make after manually setting favicons for the favorites/bookmarks.

If, after manually setting favicons, you decide to try the automatic fetching feature again, your manual settings may be reset. Likewise, if you import bookmarks after making manual changes to them, the imported bookmarks may override or change the existing ones.

Microsoft is trying to make UWP apps the staple app type that runs on Windows but they are far too limited, at present, to become more popular.

If you want, you can manually set favicons for bookmarks in Chrome.
