Apple has seeded the official iOS 4.1 for iPod Touch 4th generation (4G). The new iPod Touch 4G was announced at Apple’s recent music event and is considered to be the iPod counterpart of the iPhone 4, sharing basically the same hardware components with some minor differences. While most units come with iOS 4.1 pre-installed, initial shipments might have an earlier version of iOS 4.x and those users can now update to iOS 4.1 from iTunes. Game Center

FaceTime call connection can be made using email contacts and favorites, since an iPod Touch doesn’t a have phone number associated with it.
P2P apps are now supported
Nike+ iPod version statistics can be submitted over Wi-Fi
Nike+ iPod updated to fully utilize the Retina display
Battery life improments
HD videos can be uploaded over Wi-Fi
In selected regions where iTunes Music Store is available, users can access Ping, Apple’s new social music discovery network
TV show rentals (for US customers only)
Appointments can be moved between calendars

The only reason that sounds logical enough for early release of iOS 4.1 for iPod touch 4G seems to be shipment of devices with an earlier iOS 4.x variant, since most iPod Touch 4G devices now ship with iOS 4.1 in the first place. The users who got devices with an older version of iOS might have to update their devices manually to iOS 4.1 through iTunes after they get their new iPod Touch. iOS 4.1 for iPod Touch 4G is only meant for specifically this device, meaning that you will not be able to update your 2nd or 3rd generation iPod Touch to this firmware build.
