How can you record a Google Meet meeting/call

With online meeting tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, a recording feature is standard. It stands to reason that Google Meet will have something that is similar i.e., users are able to record a meeting. Google Meet does allow users to record a meeting but it is a premium feature which means that free users cannot use it.

  • Teaching and Learning Upgrade (Available to users with a “Teaching and Learning Upgrade” license)
  • Workspace Individual Subscriber

This essentially means that free Google Meet users will have to improvise. Fortunately, it isn’t that hard to record a Google Meet meeting from the desktop. The recording will be made and saved locally using a third-party tool.

Record Google Meet – native feature

If you have one of the aforementioned types of subscriptions, you can record Google Meet meetings without a third-party tool.

  1. Start a meeting (you must be the host).
  2. Click Activities in the bottom left.
  3. Select Recording from the list of activities.
  4. The meeting will begin recording.

Set up OBS screen recording

The best tool for recording your screen is OBS. It is free, and it is feature-rich. It can record anything on the screen along with audio from the mic and the speakers. You will have to set it up before the meeting but that is the only hard part.

  1. Install OBS and open the app.
  2. Click the plus button under the Sources column.
  3. Select Display Capture from the menu if you want to record an entire screen or select Window Capture if you only want to record the browser window.
  4. In the window that opens, click OK.
  5. On the next window, you can select either the entire desktop or you can select the browser window that you will join the Google Meet meeting in.
  6. Click OK and the source will be added.
  7. Make sure both the mic and the speakers are not muted

Record Google Meet meeting

To record the Google Meet meeting, follow these steps.

  1. Open OBS with everything all set up.
  2. Click Start recording.
  3. Minimize OBS.
  4. When the meeting is over, open OBS and click Stop recording.

Conclusion

If you expect to share your screen, or for anyone else to do so during a meeting, it is best to select an entire display as the input or display capture source instead of a browser window. No one will know that you’re recording the meeting unless you share the screen and and the OBS window is visible or its taskbar or Dock icon is visible. This method will work on both Windows 10 and macOS.
