How to back up UWP app settings on Windows 10

Universal windows platform apps have a lot of limitations. These apps are Microsoft’s attempt to give users a uniform app experience while also giving developers a basic app development framework to work with. It’s limitations are what hold it back and some of them are so basic, it makes you wonder why they’re there to begin with. One limitation with these apps is that there’s no simple way to back up app settings out of the box which desktop apps can do with exceptional ease. If you want to back up UWP app settings on Windows 10, you can use an app called CloneApp for Universal Apps.

Back up UWP app settings

The app works but in order to back up UWP app settings, you will likely need to open and close this app several times.

Run the app and click Info at the bottom of the left column. When the Info section expands, enable the ‘Export app configuration’ option and click Yes on the screen when prompted. Click on Apps next. If you’re unable to click on it, you should close the app and then run it again.

When you click Apps, CloneApp UA will search your system for UWP apps and list them all. This includes system apps as well as third-party apps that you’ve installed from the Microsoft Store. Select any number of apps, and click the Backup option in the column on the left. You will see backup progress in a new pane on the right.

CloneApp UA backs up data and not the app itself. This means that if you later remove an app from your system, you cannot use CloneApp UA to install it again. You will need to install it from the Microsoft Store, or wherever else you installed it from.

Once the app has been installed on your system, open CloneApp UA and click the Restore option. If you have several apps backed up, you can select which ones to restore, or restore them all at once.

The settings that are backed up depend on the app that they belong to. If an app doesn’t have setting that it can back up then CloneApp UA isn’t going to be able to do much. For apps that you use with an online ID e.g., the Netflix app or the iTunes app, CloneApp UA will not store the ID or their passwords. It will save other preferences such as your download settings for the Netflix app.
