Computers have come a long way from when they used to occupy entire rooms. They’re now portable, and small enough to fit in a backpack. A lot has changed but one thing still holds true; they tend to get hot. A laptop does not generate the same amount of heat as the early computers did but they do still get hot. If a Windows PC gets too hot, it might shut down unexpectedly and it might damage your hardware which is why it’s important to keep an eye on your Windows PC temperature.

We should mention that you need only monitor your Windows PC temperature if you feel it is running too hot. It is normal for a laptop or a PC to heat up to some extent. If you’re playing games, your system will obviously run hotter than when it is idle or if you’re performing less resource intensive tasks. You should not compare to how hot your system is when you’re watching Netflix to how hot it is when you’re playing a game.
Check Windows PC Temperature
You need a third party tool to check and monitor your Windows PC temperature. There are quite a few great tools available but we recommend using Speed Fan. The name makes it sound like it controls the fan speed and it does but it also monitors your system’s temperature. More importantly, it can monitor the temperature of individual components, and tell you if it’s increasing or decreasing.
Download and install Speed Fan. Allow it to get a reading on your hardware. Since we’re only concerned with the temperature, the Readings tab is the only one that’s relevant. You can see the temperature of your individual CPU cores, and your GPU.
The app has its own temperatures that it benchmarks against and if your system is running hotter than those benchmarks, it will indicate it as such. In the screenshot below, one of the CPU cores is too hot.
Understandably, the benchmarks may not suit your needs. In this case, you can customize them. Click the Configure button and select the component you want to modify the benchmark for.
At the very bottom, you will see a ‘Desired’ field. Set the temperature you prefer for that particular component. Next to this field, you will see a Warning field. Set the temperature that you think is too hot for the component. Click OK, and you’re done.
You can view the overall temperature for your PC in the system tray by checking the ‘Show in tray’ option however, the font used isn’t easy to read and the color of the text doesn’t help.
