GeForce Experience Recording Not Working – Here’s How to Fix This

Recording and streaming gameplay has become quite popular and there’s no shortage of apps that you can use to record gameplay or stream it live. In fact, Windows 10 offers both recording and streaming as a stock feature. Other apps used to record and/or stream gameplay are OBS and the Nvidia GeForce Experience app.

GeForce Experience Recording

The Nvidia GeForce Experience app can only be installed on systems that have an Nvidia GPU. It checks for and installs the latest GPU drivers, optimizes games for better performance, and lets you record and stream gameplay.

It’s very capable in terms of recording and streaming and it works out of the box. There isn’t anything that needs to be set up. It works in most, if not all games but sometimes, it fails to record anything.

Hardware requirements

GeForce Experience can only be installed on a system with an Nvidia GPU but having an Nvidia GPU isn’t the only requirement and not all GPUs are supported.

To check if your system meets the requirements for recording gameplay, follow these steps.

  1. Install GeForce Experience.
  2. Click the cogwheel button at the top to open the app’s settings.
  3. On the General tab, look for the Features section.
  4. If ‘In-game Overlay’ is supported, your system meets the hardware requirements for recording gameplay.

Fix GeForce experience recording not working

1. Check game-support

GeForce Experience works with a lot of games but not all of them. To check if a game you’re trying to record is supported, follow these steps.

  1. Open GeForce Experience.
  2. On the home page, you will see all the games that the app has detected.
  3. All games with a green check-mark are supported.
  4. For games you haven’t installed, refer to this Nvidia page that lists all supported games.

For unsupported games, you can try using a different recording or streaming tool.

2. Update drivers

If GeForce Experience has a pending driver update, install it.

  1. Open GeForce Experience.
  2. Go to the Drivers tab.
  3. If there’s an update listed, click to download and install it.

3. Reinstall driver

GeForce Experience can install drivers but sometimes the installation may not be successful or there may be a problem with it. You can try reinstalling the driver.

  1. Open the GeForce Experience app.
  2. Go to the Drivers tab.
  3. Click the more options (three dots) button.
  4. Select ‘Reinstall driver’.

4. Check disk space

In order to record gameplay, you must have free space on your drive.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Go to This PC.
  3. Right-click your Windows drive, and select Properties.
  4. Check how much free space is available. If there isn’t enough, free it up.

5. Change where videos are saved

If you’re low on disk space, or you’re using the Controlled Access feature on Windows 10, you can change where GeForce Experience is saving files to.

  1. Tap the Alt+Z keyboard shortcut to open the GeForce Experience in-game overlay.
  2. Click the cogwheel button.
  3. In the window that opens, click Recordings.
  4. In the Videos field, click the more options button and select a different location for saving files.

6. Exit other overlay and VR apps

One fix that works for a lot of users is to exit other gameplay recording apps that may add their own overlay to your system. Additionally, if you have a VR app installed e.g., the Oculus app, and you’re not playing a VR game, exit it. Make sure the GPU isn’t being used by another app.

7. Toggle in-game overlay

The recording feature works via the in-game overlay and sometimes, it has trouble starting up.

  1. Open GeForce Experience.
  2. Click the cogwheel button at the top right to go to the app’s settings.
  3. Go to the General tab.
  4. Turn the in-game overlay switch off.
  5. Exit the app. Restart your system.
  6. Open GeForce Experience.
  7. Click the cogwheel button.
  8. Go to the General tab.
  9. Turn the In-game overlay switch on.
  10. Try recording your gameplay.

8. Reinstall GeForce Experience

It is possible something is wrong with the GeForce Experience app. The problem may be hard to find but can normally be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the GeForce Experience app.

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs>Uninstall a program.
  3. Look for and select GeForce Experience.
  4. Click the Uninstall button and allow the app to be uninstalled.
  5. Once uninstalled, download and install GeForce Experience again.

Conclusion

The GeForce Experience app is a few years old but it tends to work differently based on your hardware configuration. Sometimes, the app struggles to work with older GPU chips even if they are supported.

Often the problem is easily fixed via one of the solutions in this post. If you’re tempted to reinstall Windows 10 to get rid of the problem, make sure you’ve run through every single solution we’ve listed first. Reinstalling the OS is a drastic step to take for such a simple problem.

  1. Thank you so much! This has been a big problem for ages! Number 7 worked for me so it’s worth a try!

  2. I have tried all these ‘solutions’ and none have worked.

I record everyday, either desktop or in-game.
I recently installed 496.09 drivers in order to play the new Call of Duty Warzone map. And literally once I was done installing, i could no longer record.

I tried going back, and rolling back the drivers, uninstalling the drivers, uninstalling geforce experience and reinstalling it. Restarting PC, and now I can no longer record at all. This is very frustrating, going on day 3 now, I have searched google trouble shooting and have not found a viable solution. When i click record, the icon on the bottom right pops up with a (cancel sign) on it, thus not recording.

Be careful of the drivers you download! Just because its new and the most recent doesn’t mean it won’t corrupt your system!

  3. Your section on whether the game is supported or not is not valid for screen recording issues. I have used geforce exp to record what I am doing on my computer even when I am not playing a game. So trying to say that this program won’t record because a particular game is not listed as supported, is moot. From my understanding, the supported game list has to do with the program (geforce exp) being able to optimize it, not to record it.
Also, having to turn off the in-game overlay option and then restart your comp every time just to get it to record is not a solution! It is a band-aid at best. This is the issue that I am dealing with and it needs to be resolved. I should not have to restart my system every time just to get this program to work correctly!!!

    • so im playing conqueror’s blade the website says i can use it for this game to record but everytime its says i cant its getting really anoying atm pls do something about that
