Steam User Search: Find and Connect with Friends on Steam
Steam is home to quite a few online games, and using the steamcommunity search feature is one of the easiest ways to connect with other players. It also has an entire social aspect to it i.e., it’s more than just a gaming platform. The Steam client has built-in chat that you can use to talk to your friends as you play.
Steam User Search
In order to use Steam, everyone must create an account. Each user sets their own display name and chooses to make their profile public or private. If you have a public profile, other users can find you by searching for it. Likewise, you can find other users.
To find a user, you need one of the following;
- A username
- A link to a user’s profile
1. How to Use steamcommunity search
You can search for users from the Steam community tab. The steamcommunity search tool is primarily an alias or display-name search, so enter the person’s Steam display name rather than a full profile URL.
- Open the Steam client or visit the Steam website.
- Click Community.
- Navigate to steamcommunity.com/search/users/ and enter the person’s Steam alias or display name in the search field.
- Tap Enter.
- Look through the results and find the person you’re looking for.
Note: If you already have a full profile URL — such as https://steamcommunity.com/id/customname or https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/7656… — open that URL directly in your browser instead of using the steamcommunity search field. Pasting a full profile link into the search bar will not reliably return the correct result.
2. Search friends
You can use Steam’s friends; chat and list to look for users but this search will only look through your friends’ list. It is not a general search of all Steam users. You must be logged into Steam.
- Open the Steam client.
- Click the Friends & Chat button at the bottom right.
- Click inside a search bar and enter a username.
- Tap enter and look for a user.
3. Find recently played
You’re free to play games with anyone on Steam. If you ever play an online game and want to connect with some of the players, you can check who you’ve recently played with.
- Open Steam.
- Click your profile name at the top (next to Community).
- Click Recently played from the column on the left.
- You will see a list of players you’ve recently played a game with. The list is sorted by games.
4. steamcommunity search by SteamID64, custom URL, or full profile URL
When an alias search returns too many results or the person you’re looking for has a common display name, the most reliable way to reach a specific Steam account is through a unique identifier — a SteamID64, a custom URL, or a full profile URL.
SteamID64 (Community ID): Every Steam account is automatically assigned a unique 17-digit number, for example 76561198000000000. No two accounts share the same SteamID64, which makes it the most precise way to identify a profile.
Custom URL: A user-chosen text identifier that a player can set to replace the numeric ID in their profile address, such as exampleuser. Not every account has one.
Steam profile URLs follow one of two patterns:
- https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/STEAMID64 — works for every Steam account
- https://steamcommunity.com/id/CUSTOMURL — only works if the user has set a custom URL
If you already know someone’s SteamID64 or custom URL, paste the corresponding profile URL directly into your browser’s address bar. You don’t need to use steamcommunity search at all.
How to find your own profile URL (desktop or web):
- Open the Steam client or the Steam website and make sure you are logged in.
- Click your username at the top of the Steam window.
- Select View my profile, then copy the URL from your browser’s address bar — that is your full profile URL, and it contains either your SteamID64 or your custom URL.
Note: The Steam mobile app does not expose your SteamID64 in the same straightforward way as the desktop client or browser. Use the desktop client or the Steam website to retrieve your profile URL reliably.
Username vs profile link
You can search for a user by their username or a profile link however, a profile link is a far more accurate way to search for users. Steam allows multiple users to have the same username so you may be looking at a very long list of players when trying to find a particular person.
Privacy settings usually limit what profile details are visible, but they do not necessarily make an account unsearchable. A private profile may still appear in steamcommunity search results or be reachable by a direct profile URL — however, public details such as the user’s game library, friends list, and profile information may be hidden from view.
steamcommunity search: Final Thoughts
Steam offers players a large community to interact with. You can find players who play the same games as you and plan gaming sessions with them via Steam.
