How To Search For Music By Genre Or Label On Spotify

Spotify lets you search for a track of your choice, or it lets you search tracks by album, artist, or perhaps a radio station. What it doesn’t let you do is search for songs by genre. It isn’t that Spotify hasn’t sorted its library into genres. That’s unimaginable for a music service and Spotify is no different. The genre’s are definitely there and you can even search a particular genre of your choice if you know how to do it.

To search Spoify by genre; type the following in the search bar on the desktop or web app.

genre:[name+of+genre]

The plus symbols represent a space in the name of the genre you’re searching for so if you’re looking for songs that are Gothic Metal, the search parameter will look like this;

genre:gothic+meal

The search results list both artists that produce music for that genre and songs from it. You can also search for music by label using a similar parameter;

label:[name+of+label]

If you’re searching for music released by Sony, your search parameter will look like this;

label:Sony

The need to search for a song by label isn’t a common one but genre search is something you might want to use. The search results for the songs are sorted by popularity though you can sort them by their length. It goes without saying when entering the name of a label or a particular genre of music you have to spell it correctly. If you’re searching by label, pay close attention to the spelling and if you’re searching by genre, pay close attention to where you put the spaces as well.
