DNS and IPv6 leaks: how to diagnose and fix them

DNS and IPv6 leaks are among the most frequently overlooked privacy problems, yet they are often the ones that silently expose your identity even when your VPN appears to be working correctly.

What is a DNS leak?

Every time you visit a website, your browser sends a DNS query to translate a domain name into an IP address. If those queries travel outside your VPN tunnel and reach your ISP’s resolvers instead of your VPN provider’s servers, your ISP can see every site you visit—even though your traffic is technically encrypted. This is a DNS leak.

How to run a DNS leak test

  3. If your VPN does not support IPv6, disable IPv6 at the operating system or router level.
