How To Root Your Android Phone Or Tablet

We have been covering rooting procedures for several Android devices in the past and in this post, we aim to bring them all together. In the beginning, you might see just a few devices listed here but over time, we will be updating this guide with rooting procedures for all the devices we have already covered as well as those we will be covering in the future.

Disclaimer: Rooting your device will void its warranty. In addition, performing the rooting procedure incorrectly may have unexpected consequences. Please follow this guide at your own risk. AddictiveTips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.

Android is based on Linux and comes locked with only standard user access given to its user. Root access – also known as Superuser access – is the access level on Linux-based devices that lets their users perform administrative tasks including updating the system, installing applications at the core level without using the standard ‘.apk’ installation files, accessing the system partition, modifying protected system files and changing their permissions etc.

The procedure for rooting an Android device varies from device to device. Fortunately, we have already covered rooting procedures for most Android phones. Just go to the procedure that applies to your phone and follow it. We shall be adding more devices here as they get released and their rooting methods become available.

If one of these methods works for your device, you don’t need to go through any dedicated procedure. Just confirm that the method you are using supports your device, before trying it out.

While the above universal methods work well on most devices running Android 2.2 Froyo or earlier, they may or may not work on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. For those of you with Gingerbread (2.3 or later) devices, here is another universal tool built for the very purpose:

Do the universal methods support rooting Micromax A60 (which actually is rebranded ZTE penguin)?

Or will the ZTE Racer way work?

A60 comes with the stock 2.1 (update1 or whatever it means).

  I am not sure whether the universal method supports it or not but I wouldn’t recommend trying a method that is specific to one device, with another one.
  I’ll just try finding a dedicated method for the ZTE Penguin and feature it here when (if) I find one.

I’m a complte newbie as it pertains to Android. I got a Viewsonic ViewPad 10 – the one with dual boot Android and Windows 7. It’s a cool device but my issue is that it’s running Android 1.6. I found what I think is a ROM for it on code.google.com, but I am SO nervous about actually doing the root! And isnt the ROM for upgrading the OS – not rooting? If someone could post rooting procedures for the Viewsonic Viewpad 10 I would be most grateful! Thanks!

Hi,

Any guidance please

Rooted SAMSUNG Galaxy 551with z4root and now back is not working. Event tried Button Saviour, but it also doesn’t work. So it means not problem with hardware but some soft piece got interrupted while rooted the phone.

Any suggestions as now warranty is void and I am left on community help.

How about the Lt8025 KLU tablet by Curtis? It’s dirt cheap and has USB and Wired NIC. But just OS2.1 and no market.

Would it be possible to provide a guide for a tablet, MID 7 in. With A7 processor running 2.3.4. Tried ginger break, cant find anything. Tried super oneclick and it cant find drivers. Universal androot doesnt work for anything 2.3 and above so im stuck. Thry gave me a tab that has a 1.5 processor but i cant use to full potential as i need root to modify cpu as mine stops at 1008 mghz. Any help would be awesome, and greatly appreciated. I am not new to rooting at all, all my android devices are running clockwork recovery and rom manager for all. So i do know what iam doing i just cant find drivers for this thing andbdont know how to develop a way.
